Came across this on change.org, seem a pretty interesting idea, I suppose signing it does no harm and it at least gives some awareness to hunting etc as a general thing anyways

Can't quite see what he's banging on about there.
We already have regulated hunting rights on public land throughout the UK, in the shape of stalking leases on Forestry Commission land. Anyone can apply for such a lease, or apply to join a syndicate that holds such a lease.

So a pretty pointless petition, imo.

Sounds like he is pushing for something similar to what we have in the US. Anyone can hunt public land (unless it's a preserve). No leases are needed. If you have license, then you can hunt anywhere there's public land (obviously not within a city and the like).

If they ever reintroduce an apex predator, they're going to need hunters with access to maintain a balance.

See what your saying but I read it n thought it seemed more like they’re advocating for it to be a right much like the US. No syndicated or leased etc but just freely available with a permit type thing

Nope. What we'd likely end up with is a plethora of English hunters with little experience as they've been unable to secure regular stalking in their own area. In addition, we don't have hunting permits, hunters ed', etc. What about calibre restrictions, regulated seasons, etc, etc?

How would it be policed/managed? Who takes responsibility for liability? Insurance costs would be astronomical. What about carcass disposal to AGHEs? We find it hard enough as it is.

And absolutely no offence to the English, but we Scots really don't want to see hordes of you crossing the border ad lib and armed to the teeth 😆

Bad idea in my view, and one I personally won't be supporting, I'm afraid

I can see your point. Your system of hunting has evolved over a long period of time; changing it now would probably seriously upset things, rather than help things.

As you point out, you don't have the logistical apparatus in place to support easily migrating to a US based open lands policy (never mind the laws regulating liability and disputes).

I can't see a system like ours working in Scotland , not just because of limited spaces to hunt , but because of centuries of hunting tradition that wouldn't easily adapt to an open access model . We have millions of square miles of uninhabited space here , you ,unfortunately , do not .

Absolutely agree. The UK just doesn't have the culture that would make a system like that feasible.
