Canadian Moving to UK - Novice to Stalking

Hello all,

I am a Canadian relocating to Hampshire for a couple years this summer on military exchange and am a novice at stalking. I had my first season in Alberta, Canada this last winter.

I have been primarily looking for deer and would like to continue the sport once in the UK.

I shoot a .308 but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a certificate before coming over. Will likely borrow until I can get licensed and buy a local firearm. In the meantime, I think I will look into some of the programmed stalking trips in my area.

Best,

Jack

Hi Jack,

Welcome from London.

You could ask around in the unit when you arrive to see if there are any stalkers there. The easiest solution is to get onto paid stalking to begin with, using an estate rifle, while looking into the process of obtaining a firearm certificate.

Hope you enjoy the exchange - I had a great time over on a course in Ontario a few years ago. Give my regards to Tim Hortons!

Hi Jack and welcome, I've got an acreage in crowsnest pass I'm hoping to build on next year. Look us up if you find yourself in the Salisbury area.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the warm welcome. I will look into see if anyone at my unit is into stalking. Thanks for the tip on DDM; not sure if I'll be eligible but we'll see.

It would be nice to think DDM would pull out the stops to accommodate an interested overseas comrade so give it a go. I believe they run a tight ship in terms of a qualifying training programme but even if you only got to engage with that it would be interesting and worthwhile.

Welcome to SD

Hi Jack
What we park of Hampshire are you going to be staying/ working.
You may be able to come out with someone local for an introduction to UK stalking on thin site.
I’m just north of the Hampshire border.

DDM certainly have plenty of land, MOD train on/own 1% of UK land mass. Get up Cape Wrath if you get chance.
Unfortunately I doubt the DDM will be an option. In some areas the waiting list is over 3 years as it’s all on dead men’s shoes.
They also require you to have FAC and possibly DSC1 to even get on the list, and then have to prove how much return of service you can give the organisation.
As others have said it’s a very closed organisation unfortunately.

I work in the defence sector and I'm ex military, I only came across the DDM recently working on a DIO
