Car insurance renewal

A 'friend of mine' had a letter from the DVLA drop through his door this afternoon. Said letter informed me him that as his car was uninsured he was subject to a £100 fine (reduced to £50 should I he pay before a certain date. Having scoffed at the incompetency of the DVLA, because of course he was insured he thought he'd better check, just in case.......

To my his horror, he discovered that this was indeed the case, and that he'd been driving around completely uninsured for an embarrasingly (and worrying) long period

That situation was immediately rectified, but you can rest assured it's put a shiver down his back.

If you deselect 'auto-renew, as I he did, at least ensure you have a reminder in your phone, or whatever, of your insurance expiry date

I guess it's there as a punishment, and to pay the admin overheads?
