Carrying magazines - best practice?

I'm not sure it has?
My takeaway message is that with respect to S1 firearms in a public place, there is in law no definition of 'loaded' as there's no differentiation between loaded and unloaded when it comes to having the S1 firearm and ammunition for it with you.

As far as UK law goes where there is a definition of loaded, it seems to mean broadly that it is loaded if you can pick it up and by operating part/s of it make it ready to fire, or to quote the Act itself:
S57 (6)
For purposes of this Act—

(a)the length of the barrel of a firearm shall be measured from the muzzle to the point at which the charge is exploded on firing; and

(b)a shot gun or an air weapon shall be deemed to be loaded if there is ammunition in the chamber or barrel or in any magazine or other device which is in such a position that the ammunition can be fed into the chamber or barrel by the manual or automatic operation of some part of the gun or weapon.
From your quote, The legislators specifically state shotgun and air weapon, they for reasons not known, do not mention firearms. Intentional or remiss? Technicality of law.
As previously stated it will require a higher court determination.

It's a bit like having a barrel weight ie flash hide etc and carring a loaded mag both are not firearms but some cock decided they were ! but I guess common sense ist so common.
Am I wrong and is there any proof one has taken a life while not attached to a firearm.? As iam open to be told iam wrong .

Having read this thread through (I can't get that time back) I think the thing to do is not to take any ammo to your permissions. Instead, when you get there, erect a shed, bring your powder, brass, primers and press along with all the other accoutrements you need and only construct rounds once there. Whilst you are there, ensure you fire all the rounds you've made so when you take all that gubbins home, you haven't got any viable ammo on you.

Can't see anything wrong with that. But heaven knows how you get factory rounds to your permissions. Anyway, you've probably left your bolt at home.

A higher court to determine what?
The law defines 'loaded' for S2 shotguns and non-FAC air-weapons because those two categories have laws relating to them where their being loaded, as opposed to unloaded, makes a difference.
For S1 firearms, there are no such provisions - so no need for a definition.

Hmmm. I found that confusing whenever I watched an american war film. If it's locked how do you pull it open to load? Would Loaded and Locked be more sensible?
Just saying......it's like Potatos or Potatoes:D
I'm off out now!
I'll admit I have pondered the same contradiction!

Unloaded mag in rifle when in transit with rounds in pocket. Loaded mag and one up the spout (safety on) when stalking. Unload when climbing over gates etc.

As I read this i am waiting on my breakfast sitting in a local prison cell, got stopped in my vehicle late last night on my way to shoot a few rabbits, Armed response unit no less.

I had a loaded firearm with me, a sound moderator and loaded magazine, a deadly combination. No rifle for at my age I forgot it and it’s still in the gun cabinet. Apparently looking at a five year stretch.

life too short go shooting 😂😂

Like I said in an earlier post people are too scared of their own shadows!

Is it permissable to walk down that public road without rifle in a gunslip when stalking (with permission etc)?
I don't need to walk the road to stalk. It's high hedges and gates anyway.

But I do need to cross the road if I want to go from one part to another. The parking also isn't where I can gain access via a gate.

I would hope crossing the road or walking a short distance to the gate would firmly be under reasonable excuse.

Most shooting in my area involves parking on the road side or gateways. So there will often be a time when you're in 'public' with a gun. Again I firmly believe if you're acting with common sense, that's quite normal.
