Cast Antler.

If there's one thing I've taken away from this deer stalking malarkey is that I wish I'd started years ago but I am where I am.

These days, I don't go round woodland with my eyes looking at the treetops, I'm always on the hunt for evidence of deer or the actual deer themselves and today I came upon a single Roe antler cast. In the past I'd have simply thought it was a piece of broken branch but I knew what it was straight away.

The question is, do these have any "traditional" use? I've not attempted to clean it in any way, just drying it off on the indoor window sill.

Friend of mine makes toggles, whistles and various "gift items " from them.
I,d try but being cack handed would make a mess instead 🤣.

I have a couple of Row antlers here. I was thinking of mounting them on a nice piece of wood to make a row (Roe) of coats hooks for the hallway.

Just need to make sure they're above eyeball height.

If anybody wants to donate to the cause, please feel free as I only have the one pair at the moment.

People top walking sticks with them. As above, I'm going to make a coat rack.

I've seen plenty of roe antlers being used as things such as bottle openers, corkscrews etc. Process seems pretty simple. I recently treated myself to a Dremel multi tool type thing and have given engraving some skulls and antlers a bash.

I did a fallow skull and had it on display at a recent Xmas market that I was attending. Within minutes of being set up I had 2 separate couples interested in purchasing the skull. Needless to say it didn't go home with me. Time consuming creating it but worth it in the end, using all available parts of the animal.

They love antler to chew on, but, it’s not without its risks, and if they get a bad splinter, it can be a big vet bill, or worse. Personally, I’d not recommend it, and I find it shocking the pet shops and country stores and flogging 4-6” pieces at £10+ a pop when it’s actually not really that safe.

further to the antler thread,i said i was looking for some for a jewellery project, here is a prototype i have come up with using part of a crown from a roe,308win case cut down for the hanging bale,a carnilian stone in the center, all set in oxydixed copper with brass rivets
approx 55mm across.
cheers JB
