Planning on a holiday next year, Cuba on the list.

My colleague used to recommend a trip around the Cigar factory - he was buying $50 cigars for $, direct from the workers!

Not entirely sure that that was either legal or safe...

I have smoked a pipe seriously and on and off for years. I do not inhale the smoke but used to in my younger days. I am fortunate to be able to go as long as I want to without a smoke (at present five weeks) but would never give it up altogether as there are times I really enjoy it. Sat in a high seat on a frosty.morning can be one, or after catching my first fish on a Spring morning. Then I sit back and enjoy a pipeful of black cherry or red Cavendish. In my 80's I am very mindful of enjoying life.

I have a similar story , I’d be a user rather than an addict.
I love a cigar in good company on an occasion, or on a frosty morning stalk or shoot, but I can easily go months without one.
I can’t stand the smell the morning after.

Absolutely enjoy the odd celebratory smoke! Life isn’t long enough to not enjoy the odd treat! My father recently passed away after a battle with Parkinson’s; he never smoked nor drank much at all. He said in his later years how much he wished he had enjoyed the unhealthy things in life more if he only knew his life would be cut short.

Long story short, enjoy it! It might not last long, just don’t abuse it

Well I think I've enjoyed all the unhealthy things in life(the only drug being nicotine)and still do. I like the smoking as my previous post, a couple of pints or a glass of malt and even the odd twitch can still lead to further action. I have no real regrets apart from the odd life (not all) taken so will happily plod on enjoying my last few mortal coils, until he sends that bloke with the scythe to fetch me.

absolutley enjoy the odd cigar , i do! and have done for 20 years (i'm 52 now)

as for getting addicted i personally think that is more down to your character type where some people just can't help overdoing it no matter what it is so if you are a really heavy drinker or bad gambler maybe be honest about your chances of getting obsessed!

i would recommend a short robusto or short churchill and try to find a mild one , the bigger ring gauges being my preference , if you can lay your hands on a cohiba behike then prepare yourself for a treat ! (i smoked all mine and now i'm sad)

juding by what you want to achieve from this a 50+ ring guage but shorter length will suit you as some of the longer bigger cigars can take a couple of hours to smoke and don't forget your cutter and google how to light it properly

personally since a rather excessive evening in scotland about 6-7 years ago after a hard day at the hinds i cannot stomach whiskey anymore although just the smell doesn't make me gip anymore so maybe i am on the mend? i prefer a great port and frankly to sit down with a great cigar and some vintage port is one of lifes pleasures.

Once got drunk on this stuff when I was studying for my O'Levels (so a lifetime ago)... the smell of it still makes me heave...

I have reread all the posts and deduced the following.

Buy small, mild cigar
Buy a large cigar (but don’t load it mid-drive)
Don’t buy a cigar
Avoid buses
Don’t buy a second cigar
Buy Cuban
Buy new world
Buy some whisky

You have clarified this in wonderful SD style and I’m now armed with all of the information and no closer to a decision!!


I may try a single Montecristo Open J. Reviews suggest it’s a mild cigar, with a short smoke time.

Knowing my luck, it will rain sufficiently that I have a sodden stogie that is unlightable.

Either way, I’ll get watch my good friend shoot, in the company of my other greatest friends. Hip Flask in hand.

Cigar or no cigar, it’s a good enough way to celebrate a new decade.

Something Dominican from Davidoff would be a nice mild cigar. Most of the sites will give "tasting" notes. Davidoff Primeros would be a good shout and if you find that cigars aren't for you won't have broken the bank either.

I was reading this thread and was thinking, davidoff primeros would be a good choice. I prefer darker more moist cigars to the dryer lighter coloured ones.

I ordered it in a batch from Neptune Cigars in Miami.

Most of those cigars are from either Neptune, Warsaw or Budapest. The UK is a ripoff for cigars.

Seems they can post (without drama) to the UK but this was interesting...

They have a huge selection.

I've had 3 shipments from them, always well packaged to avoid damage and they have Bovida packs in there to maintain the correct humidity.

Shipping was around £25 from the US.

Utah and SD have a prohibited on shipping tobacco I believe.

In 2017 I nearly flew to Miami around xmas/ny as the return flight would be cheaper than the duty on the cigars in the UK.

Fly in Friday, party, cigar shopping Saturday, fly back Sunday.
