Chainsaw courses

Appealing to the experience of the site, there is a 5 day course

City & Guilds Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross Cutting Felling & Processing Trees up to 380mm 2003/2004

And a 2 day course that just covers maintance and cross cutting.

Do I need to/is it advisable to do the shorter course first or can I jump straight into the 5 dayer ?

Thanks in advance.

Just my personal opinion as a tree surgeon i do the five day course. When you have passed then the real learning and gaining experience begins also ( it would me ) show that you are keen on learning the trade . Good luck be safe chainsaws can have a nasty bite 👍

Hi I'm an arborist over in Shropshire. From my experience, doing the 5 day course will probably be more beneficial rather than doing them separately. Everything you'll have learnt from the cross cutting and maintenance will still be fresh in your mind which will help you with your Felling too. Stay safe and remember to check for hanging branches🤙

Talking of breaking out the pants, read the small print. Most courses will supply saws but you'll probably be responsible for supplying your own PPE. And it will need to be compliant. So check the requirements and make sure you're correctly kitted up or they may turn you away on day one and cancel your enrollment before you start.
Some courses have six month waiting lists because of the Scamvid lockdown backlog. So be sure you've crossed every T and dotted every I.

I bought new boots for the course as the pair I had weren't compliant. I brought my own saw, but when the muffler came loose on the final morning, I used one of the course saws for the rest of the day. On the course that I was on, fuel and oil were provided. Initially I thought 4 days was too long, but the time flew by.
Very worthwhile doing.

If you’re doing the course for future tree work-arborist ,forestry work you’ll want the full five days if it’s just for your own log cutting purposes the 2 days will do

The 5 day one covers the 2 day one in Cross cutting and maintenance then the rest is felling and processing
