Cheap (sub £100!) stalking jacket?

Hi all,

Please could I have any recommendations for cheap shooting jackets? I don’t know how possible this is with my budget (50-100ish max) but interested to see if anyone knows of anything half decent?

I have been using an army surplus camo jacket for years and although it has loads of pockets and has done me well (and most importantly was dirt cheap!) it’s not waterproof at all and I now want something more like drab green (I have also been wearing camo trousers and hat and don’t really like going out fully camo!).

So basically is there anything out there waterproof, lots of useful pockets, green, and fairly hard wearing for my small budget? Doesn’t have to be that warm as it’s easier just to layer up underneath in winter, then also use the jacket as lightweight summer jacket.

any help much appreciated!

I was in there today funnily enough looking at a green jacket for about £60. It was a bit short for my liking. More bomber with a hood than long. However they often have green coats the right length and the right price. How waterproof they may be? Well if you look at some of the better known names you might be ok. But definitely worth a look.
 
For a stalking jacket I don't think that the Army smock design can be beaten. Buy some of Diver Dave's "Repel" and treat an olive smock, then use the spare cash from your £100 budget to buy an ex army gore-tex waterproof and wear it under your smock when it is very wet weather. When finances allow buy a lightweight Arktis olive breathable to go under your smock:

What bout a German army flecktarn pattern? Always thought be good for our shores & as for diverdave Repel you will not get better stuff!

I think the army smock can't be beaten as a stalking/fishing/walking jacket. As has been said get a waterproof layer to wear under it when it's really wet and you are sorted.

You don't just need to look at army surplus for a waterproof layer, there are lots of inexpensive lightweight commercial jackets about as well. Something like a Regatta "pack it jacket" might do your job for £15 or less.

As Paul has said, above, the german flecktarn waterproof jacket is very good. My experience is that all goretex jackets eventually leak but the German flecktarn one I got many years ago has never leaked, I've worn through a few British DPM and MTP ones in that time.

Another advantage of going to a "clothing system" like this is flexibility - I wear an old surplus MTP jacket, without the smock on top as I don't need the pockets, for lambing with all the clothes I own on underneath to keep me warm. If I get the offer of fishing I can put the windproof smock on over it and away I go ready for any weather. Equally if the forecast is for it to be dry or just showery then there is no need to carry or wear the waterproof layer. As the windproof smocks are so inexpensive so I've a few of them and I tend to keep them "configured" for different duties - so if I'm going fishing the DPM one goes on whereas if I'm off stalking I wear the MTP one with the knowledge that the pockets will contain what I need.

So, if you are already wearing a windproof smock then I'd say you've got the problem almost solved and you have lots of options in your price range, however don't get rid of the smock but build it into a clothing system that will be suitable for any conditions you might meet.
 
Have a Jack Pike Hunter jacket - pretty waterproof, good pockets, comfortable and rustle free/quiet. Mine is English oak camo but same jacket available in green. Go for around £80? Was bought as a stop gap but have actually been surprisingly impressed given the price tag. Worth a look either way.

I bought a deerhunter jacket and trousers combo from mmbeatle on this site for £90. Good enough for a recreational stalker, but probably not robust enough for serious use. Comfy and warm enough for what I do.
 
Laviner jacket,go for the olive they are one hundred percent waterproof mines is twelve years old and still waterproof,don’t go for the real tree one as water comes in up the sleeves,w

Get an Austrian army mountain goretex jacket. Its a green/grey colour, has a great hood and usable pockets. Its made from real goretex so much more breathable than anything else in the price bracket...
 
Same as Smelly Yeti - mine was £60.00. I've had it about 7 years, sprayed some more waterproofing on it once, just for good measure.
