Good look with the hunt.
I’ve tried several times over the last 10 years to source tools.
Still looking..theyre always out of stock, or come in an expensive kit, either way, not for the amateur.

From experience. Dembart is not very good (sorry!), ok for maybe touching up existing checkering if you are 100% sure it’s the same LPI and pitch and depth. I would personally not cut new checkering with them, and if you do, do it after stock is finished / oil finished.

It was written in the 1920’s and pretty much gives you all the information you need on making the tools to make and repair shotguns and rifles using basic hand tools. There is a good section on making checkering tools etc. out of simple drill rod or as its called in the Uk Silver steel.

In terms of materials - this stuff is pretty superb. I have a few lengths in different diameters. It arrives soft, pretty easily worked with a file and can be bent.

Easy to harden. Heat to a dull cherry red with a simple gas blow torch. Quench in rapeseed oil.

To temper, heat the shaft and you will see the colours change from light straw (still very hard) to blue - springy. Or dip in oil and heat until oil burns off

The tool i have has a double cutter and a screw set at 90deg to accept multi cutting blades after looking at it again i maybe able to make it work its to pickup some chequering on a stock i have just refinneshed for a mate not on expensive gun or i would not be attempting it thanks for all the info
