Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

Lanolin to ensure quick drying after one good shake. A CBR will happily swim in slush for hours.
I had several pals with CBR over the years are you sure its lanolin they have hair not wool?
It's just a very greasy coat, very tight, double and durable like old fashioned labs had before they messed them up for trailing. The ones I new were very strong dogs but did like a fight. I would say they are the GWP of the retrievers.

I agree, the two I knew were bold 'bullish' buggers, they seem naturally dominant and 'pushy'.

I had one as fowling dog many many years ago she was a bloody good dog easy to train and even the ice never bothered her Mr red dot would have been your man ! I am sure there is someone on here who has his contact info . they can take a fair bit of fitness to keep them up to speed as they get fat and lazy like Labs if neglected
Cant say if there good house dogs ours lived outside year long .

A good few years ago in a previous life I was running a training exercise (police firearms containment exercise on an initial course) at lovely large house surrounded by its own wood with a pond outside. The lovely but rather clueless lady owner had a Chessie who was as described above "a bit of a lad".
The only way they could keep him inside the considerable grounds was with a proximity fence and collar....he stayed within the boundary but anything inside was fair game.
She let us have full roam of the place but also did the same with the dog.......he made a bloody nuisance of himself throughout the day. Completely rifled the kit van tipping all the kit out, helped himself to two full pack-ups out of unattended kit bags and cocked his leg on two staff concealed in containment positions.....but he was a cheeky chap with it and everyone (well apart from 2 people) loved him.😂

I’ve seen around 6 or 7 working (mainly wildfowling) over the years and I personally haven’t seen any that could do anything better than a lab . Like most dogs they have there pluses but for me they all lacked drive when hunting especially in cover and the main downside for me was everyone of them would guard game ,ie if you were shooting and had a few birds next to you and a dog went near them they would erupt ,dogs and bitches

The other thing to mention is I believe that with their excellent coat, they suffer somewhat in warm weather, especially when working, so bear that in mind.
