Clay pigeon traps.....

How’do All!! Seems the right place to post this thread but hey ho, the Missus reckons I’m occasionally wrong so who knows... 🙄😂

Anyways.... I’m wanting to get myself a clay pigeon trap for use at home - nowt mega - somewhere around the 500 mark give or take and I’ve come across a GDK Black Wing which seems to do what I want and wondered if anyone has any experience of them specifically? I actually have a GDK branded ammo cabinet in my ever growing gun cabinet collection and whilst I don’t think it’s quite the quality of a Brattonsound it isn’t the price either. So just hoping to find some opinions from experience!

Link below to show the product - I have no affiliation to the company and nothing to do with selling them - just hoping someone will keep me right so I don’t blow my dosh!!

Please & thank you :)

If it needs to be portable, back of the car job every time you use it and not lots of use should do the job.
If you have storage on the ground, then try john bidwell and see if he has any secondhand reconditioned traps he makes them at high lodge, excellent after sales service for spare parts etc.

Aye - cheers, I’ll have a look at that! We stay on a little Croft so have 63 acres - so whatever I buy would live in the barn and then just move across field into position. So it doesn’t need to be too portable in all honesty - even something I could mount on an old trailer and then just tow across the field into position.

Like “little Croft 63 acres”. That far bigger than most clay grounds in Kent. 😂 I am green with envy.

We use promatic, bidwell, Laporte, traps at the club all do the job, bidwell are good solid traps and if you can buy one secondhand you will get a very good trap and we have never been let down for spares even on one that must be twenty years plus old.

Ha ha - aye, fair one - compared to a few of my closest neighbours and their sporting estates - it is very wee!! Ha ha. There’s an essentially unused wood at the far side which then backs on to a huge neighbouring estate so I’d have a massive safe boundary and it’s the furthest part of the Croft away from neighbours and equally leaves the sheep plenty of room to move and ignore my shooting. I have a 100 meter range set up for zeroing and the sheep barely bat an eyelid - well other than this time of year when they think I’m bringing feed out ha ha.

I’ve had a google and found their site so I’ll try and give them a shout through the week and see if they have anything within my budget!

I did see a very simple promatic for sale but my pal (probably correctly) reckons I’d soon be bored with it.... mind you, if you saw my shotgun skills, you’d know simple may suit me.... ha ha

Look at Promatic and Laporte traps. You won’t get a new one for that money, and you’ll probably even struggle to get a used one, but they are the market leaders. Better to spend a few more quid.

Don't touch this with a barge pole. GDK have to be the worst company for after sales I have dealt with in my life.

We bought one of these. It came in number of sections and very few of the bolt holes lined up. When we eventually got it put together it only worked for a short time then failed.

It took over 4 months to get it replaced. We were told numerous times a courier would collect it on a specific date but they never turned up. Eventually we had to involve Trading Standards to get resolution.

Promatic had two both excellent well made and spares easily got. They do a hobby one for about £700? I put a gdk wobbler on mine works great

Fair one - that’s why I like to seek opinions!! Cheers

We have 2 aerial assaults for 8 years now,
Out once a month (pre lock down) with between 6-14 people a time.
Had 1 motor go (£70) 2 relays (£35 each) and new bristles on both traps twice (£2-£4 each)
The same trap had the motor and 2 relays go, the other one nothings gone wrong with.

I think of the top of my head that’s 2700 clays through each one a year 21000 through each trap in the time we have had them.
It might even be 10 years we have had them.

Well - again, that’s why I like to see what people think - there’s always someone who likes stuff and someone who doesn’t. Certainly if they stand up to that amount of use then it’ll more than do me!

cheers for all the opinions as ever :)

John Boswell, superb man to deal with. His brother is the fabricator on site at High Lodge, his place in Suffolk. Richard is site manager, really helpful, good to deal with.
We bought 3 traps from them along with software for operating as simulated game drive clayshoots.
Had no trouble whatsoever with the traps, 350 capacity carousel models, just keep working. Software needed a tweak, sorted within a day or two and returned to us by Richard, installed and tested. No charge.
Really worth getting in touch, they will help you if they can. Highly recommended.

Excellent - thanks for all the replies and the info. I shall do some further investigation!

As ever - SD Hits the Spot.... unless you want to discuss politics, the virus, or religion.... 😳🙄😂

Cheers all!!

Don't touch the GDK with a barge pole - they are a nightmare to deal with
I have the little Promatic and it works great, fits into the boot of the car and runs from a cheapish 12v battery.
Best of all, it's a Promatic and they provide excellent backup and service.
Due entirely to my own stupidity, I managed to strip the gear in the motor of my trap one Sunday.
Monday am I call Promatic and explain the problem.
Tuesday morning I receive a replacement part free of charge and an apology.
Promatic all the way.

Cheers

Bruce

Cheers Bruce - do you mean one similar to the link someone put earlier? (The 399 one) Is that Just static then? Or can you add a wobler etc do you know?

I bought a promatic pigeon 2 years ago and its a great job.
When doing a bit of research it became very clear to stay away from the GDK traps becuase of their build quality and after sales help. The price is certainly enticing but i dont think i came across anyone who had a good thing to say about them.
