Cleaning stock oil off the action

I have been gifted a diamond pigeon from a friend who is giving up shooting due to eyesight issues. In his attempts to clean it up, comments about eyesight stand, the brights of the action have been treated to a liberal dose or six of stock oil….

I’m looking for suggestions of a solvent that will break this down without damaging the action

Have you tried unleaded petrol on a rag? The benzene dissolves most things.

Methylated spirits or brake cleaner , depending on the type of stock oil used. Careful to not get on the wood as this will also remove the polish from the wood. Use a rag and cotton buds

Take the stock off and douse in brake cleaner or cellulose thinners. Dry it all off and spray with some gun oil and reassemble.

found the bottle it was artist turpentine - they mix it with oil paint, you'll also need a lot of cotton buds

Turps is horrible stuff

Standard light solvent will take it off
Use 0000 wool soaked in isopropyl or similar

Dont even think of doing it with the stock on
Its two screws and one bolt and very simple to remove if careful
