Collecting Stag Handled Knives.... Dirty Secret.

I have a weakness for collecting stag handled knives... This is something of a dirty secret among my non shooting and PC obsessed friends. Their likely outraged opinion being for what possible evil reason would anybody want to own a 10" craftsman made Bowie Knife?

My growing collection of non user stag handled knives are kept hidden and locked away in storage and only see the light of day with safe and non PC/judgmental mates.

Recently I have purchased a couple of vintage Puma knives that are in my opinion beautiful and costly! .... See below pics of my recently purchased mint/boxed 1979 6376 Puma Bowie.

Anybody else have this affliction?

Lovely looking knife ruined by a cheap Chinese looking made sheath :(
EMcC. You could not be further from the truth. The sheath is think saddle leather and is constructed extremely well in the old West Germany. The sheath alone is worth a couple of hundred pounds to vintage Puma collectors. Its never been used or carried so is like a new pair of shoes looks better when broken in.

It was only my opinion gleaned from some of the knives I have collected over the years.
I have a couple of knives made in China that came with similar looking sheathes.
I prefer the thicker dark leather as in this one. Hand made by Puli of Hungary.

This is another Puma I recently purchased. The no longer made Puma 915 Emperor 1982. (Mint and Boxed). For reference its considerably bigger that a Buck 110 which a lot of people are familiar with.

Get out and use it!

Puma sheaths from the above period of production are far from thrown together. Even the strengthening rivets are custom made and carry the Puma logo!

Ive been a collector of knives for a long time and can confirm that there is a design and maker for every body's taste. I find the smallest detail can be the difference between weather I like or dislike a knife... And yes the leather sheath plays a big part in the equation. Nice looking knife!

My knives fall into two very clear groups. Users and non users. Between my work at Sea, RNLI, and Field sports I have a few users (Mora, Swiss army, Leatherman, Buck 110, and a old Bench-made folder) the rest are safe queens!

Show them off let them see light of day and
Big middle finger up to any “Pc “ type mates ...
Never hide what we do ....

Off course you are absolutely right..... I have been thinking for a while about some kind of custom made glass topped coffee/drinks table that is a display case with internal lights. I have two boys so it would need to be lockable. Was thinking maybe even with a removable fine wood top cover that hide the contents from view until removed with possibly a chess board design incorporated. I mentioned my idea to a pal who works in wood and he though it was a great plan but explained that to be done right and well would cost thousands!

That would be stunning

Maybe compromise a bit say on lighting etc or find a current wood display cabinet .... summit with green baize or the like ... bet you could find something

Below is some of my Stag collection.. Its growing almost consonantly and is now becoming quite a significant investment and really needs a good display case. As I mentioned I have a couple of boys (who are being raised right!) so im certain my collection will not want for a good home!Stag steel 2.webp

A pity the sheath maker did not edge nor dress the belt loop, looks like the back of the stitched part could also do with being finished. The crease tool wasn't heated properly either, it would appear.

... In the eye of the beholder, of course.

Are you a leather worker mate? If you are I would like to talk about a project?

Love your Stag collection, the Puma White Hunter would be up there for me. Thanks for sharing.

It's nice to see them in production condition. My small collection of knives are all used: Helle Futura and Steinbit, Buck 110 and 112 and the the oldest being a small Sam McDowell lock knife that my wife bought me when we were working abroad in 1981. The latter has Walrus tusk scales and some very worn out scrimshaw, it's been all over the place including through the washing machine a good few times but still sharpens like a razor.

I don't know what your problem is using them for work at sea. My Puma Hunter that I sold on here a few years ago had been around the world at least 10 times and was used as my deck knife. It's a bit like people that buy a Rolex and won't wear it to work or buy a Perazzi and won't use it on the foreshore ....whats the problem.

My collector knives are bought because of there condition so I dont want to damage them, I have others that are users/work knives. Im at work right now (currently on-board the VO Athena in port in Netherlands) and im wearing my Rolex that has been with me in fun spots around the globe since 2000.... A Perazzi on the foreshore would not be my first choice on the foreshore but each to their own! (I use a old Remington 870 pump)
