Computer issue

An odd IT question, figuring someone might know!
Work provided PC (hp elite book) - if connected to home wifi, (BT whole home 3 disc mesh) jumps to Madrid time.
If connected to modem (Zyxel for 1GB fibre) via LAN - UK time.
Once it registers Madrid time, it stays there, even if wifi disconnected.
All other home devices on UK time.
Device registers UK time at work.
Baffling, no-one else at work has this probelm
Personal PC is being reimaged at work, loan device does the same Madrid time jump
As a work device I can't change the time settings

Can you log into your Whole Home router to check the settings there, and check the system logs to see what time zone the router is set to?

Have a look here - second entry on the FAQ:

Then look at this entry to find the system logs:

One other thing - and presuming here you are using a Windows laptop:
  1. Log into the WIFi and check your time zone.
  2. If set to Madrid, then from the Control Panel go to Settings > Time & Language > Date & time.
  3. What is the setting for Set time zone automatically ?
  4. If set to On, set it to Off and select the time zone for the UK from the dropdown menu.
  5. Log off from the WiFi and log back on again.
  6. Check if the time zone has switched to Madrid.
  7. If Yes, go back in and change Set time zone automatically back to On, since it’s a different problem and this hasn’t fixed it.
  8. If No, then it may be that your router has a problem and is picking up the wrong timezone, or that you need to clear the Location cache (try going to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location and click the "Clear" button that you will find under "Location history"). Or you can just leave the laptop set to UK time - the only issue then being that your laptop won’t switch time zones automatically if you go abroad.

Ah, thanks, I've not been able to get into the BT wifi to do this. To be clear, the route is the Zyxel, the BT discs are just a WAP

This function is locked by work, I've asked to be changed

Computers can use a variety of ways to determine the time zone they are in - an internal clock, manual configuration settings, the IP (Internet Protocol) address being used, the MAC (Media Access Control) address of the Wifi access point (BSSID), Windows Location Services, etc.

In your instance it is first of all a question of tracking down where the anomaly is. By the sounds of it, everything else is fine - you mention all other devices on the WiFi are using the correct time, there's no problem on the laptop when connecting at work, etc. So it would appear to be an issue specific to your laptop.

My guess would be that the laptop's timezone cache has got screwed up somewhere and needs to be cleared - see point 8 above. Your Admin team at work should be able to do that if you don't have permission.
