Contract stalking

Like I suggested, unlikely someone becoming a contractor would come to it without a certain amount of the equipment needed. I’d have thought anyone considering it as a professional move would already have a truck?
100% agree - not something you just go out and purchase all in one go

you still need to factor in the depreciation/loss/damage on such assets even if you have them when you start - no good thinking you walked away from a contract with some profit only to have to replace a load of gear for the next job

4 years running a large contract will likely kill off a couple of sets of clothes, a winch and some thermal gear and put a good dent on your truck value and maybe barrell life

I agree entirely.
100k seems a bit strong though

Would the contractor that has won it for £16k be able to sell stalking to subsidise this, i'm not sure.

if they can sell stalking at £100 a carcass that would uplift it massively. not sure if that would be allowed on the land asking for the cull though
If i were a contractor needing to get numbers of deer, the last thing id want is to be taking out clients. In situations where your client "might" shoot 1 deer, the contractor may get 3 or 4, so time wise,
getting to your cull numbers, is grearly increased.

We were on £70 a deer and we kept the venison money when we were doing a bit. Should probably have been more. Not bad money shooting reds but you then need a quad.

Lot of honesty and trust involved that were reporting accurately but they didn’t have larders so the choice was we leave them at the gate for the forestry company to sort or we take care of the carcasses for them.

Other places where we also did rabbits and fence checks we were hourly.

Let me assure you it is.
I am surprised that someone with the experience required to gain employment as a contractor would not already have most of the equipment required (not all but most).

If you’re saying that’s often the case then I’ll just have to say I’m very surprised

People saying ‘wouldn’t they have all the equipment anyway’ is irrelevant-of course they would but that means all that cost needs to be factored into their cost of doing business and therefore dictates what they need to earn per day to make it viable.

I’m a joiner and there’s plenty of lads out there who earn £300 a day thinking they are mint who conveniently forget their £200 of overheads per day…

Just because you have it doesn’t mean the costs don’t count towards your business expenses

To an extent you are correct, however not the total cost of the original purchase?

Not denying the fact that there are justifiable expenses from working as a contractor.

£100k still seems a little over board though……

New pickup circa 50k
New quad circa 10k
Rifle circa 2k
Thermal spotter circa 5k
Thermal scope circa 5k
Capstan winch and rope circa 1.5k
Trailer circa 5k
500 factory copper bullets circa 1.5k
Glass binos circa 2k
Glass scope circa 2k

That's circa 84k without courses, spares, and small items like clothing, boots knives, lardering equipment.

Get setup to do a contract. Maybes get one, maybe not.

Agree
But if you have £200 a day overheads being a single handed joiner that’s mental
Grand a week just to run one man and a van

That’s my point exactly.
You’re going to buy 100% new equipment for a contract job?
£50k for your pickup, so it’ll be worth £0 at the end of the contract and you are going to use it ONLY on that contract?
Ditto the quad, or will you sell it on or use it elsewhere at end of contract?

As you say “get set up do a contract and maybe get one”, I strongly doubt many people would take that risk up front. It would be much more believable for people to win a contract and buy and initially use the kit they already own while adding the things that they need straight away.

Seems a long time ago in this thread that I called into question the need to invest £100k to set up as a contractor. TBH I can’t be bothered to carry on replying anymore.

Yes 200£ was a bit over the top to make the point.

See your from Lanarkshire-remember I’m a joiner as in a workshop joiner-you lads say joiner for site chippies don’t you. Absolutely, £200 a day as a man and a van on site is too much but with a workshop etc down here you can get there fairly quick (while still being a bit over the top-mind are about 80-100 a day 😭)
