You can't have your cake & eat it.
We live in a consumer society, where we are encouraged at every level to spend our money, allowing it to be taxed on every transaction. Vehicles are generally the second highest purchase anyone will make apart from their homes.
Trying to make cars a bad thing, in line with the climate change mantra, allows your pocket to be picked a little more, and your wealth to be transferred into government/council coffers.

There's too many cars. Simple as that.
Everyone seems to think that they should be entitled to park several cars per household these days, whereas in times gone by (but within my memory) not every household had a car, let alone several.
If you want to continue to live with the level of convenience that you currently you enjoy, you're going to have to put up with the inevitable counterbalance of inconvenience.

Not sure it continues to give the level of convenience any different to previously enjoyed, as does not guarantee a parking space, One now has to pay to park outside or anywhere in the parking zone to visit my elderly mum, when in days past it was free to do so.

Like the HSE (lead ban) the council did consult all the residents, but in practice ignored the responses as it just a cash cow for them and they are busy rolling out lots of them.

Wish I was stinking rich as would love to challenge them via a judicial review.
