Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are excited to announce that on Monday 30 June 2025 our Major Officials will be hosting a Culture Celebration Day during lunchtime in the courtyard.

To mark this special occasion, we invite all students and staff to bring in a dish that reflects their cultural background. This shared picnic is a wonderful opportunity for our school community to celebrate the rich diversity .

If your child would like to contribute food to our picnic, please ensure the following:

  • All food must be sesame and nut-free and vegetarian.
  • Please include a clearly labelled list of ingredients.

my daughter is 1/4 Scottish with a beef farmer grandad (the rest is pure English!) anyway can anyone tell me how to cook a traditional culturally correct roast beef dinner?

stupid bloody diversity !

the school forces a vegetarian diet on everyone and we've crossed swords before about them trying to indoctrinate my daughter who fair play gives them hell when they try their bull****

bloody nonsense !

I can just imagine what would happen if they tried that in some of the schools around here where most of the kids are farm kids!
In fact, they wouldn't try it, as most of the teachers were farm kids too!

No allergies or veganism when I grew up,you ate what was put in front of you crying about or not.
You played outside, cycled for miles, football played for hours.
No-one I knocked around with back in the late 70's & 80s had any of this food allergies, etc that you have today.

Food allergies have always been around, kids were just sickly and not diagnosed.

Vegetarians aren’t Vegans

To be honest I’d be turning up with a half a cooked cow and let them work out how to deal with it at that point.
I was vegetarian for a long time but no way would I push that choice on anyone

I concede that the the "no nuts" ruling is probably wise. I do known someone with a very severe nut allergy, and the result of him accidentally ingesting nut products would likely be tragic. However, in situations where there's a kid in school with such a severe allergy the rest of the kids, and the parents, would be aware of this anyway, to avoid problems day-to-day as a result of shared snacks etc.
Likewise, if the food is for sharing, I can understand the need to provide a list of allergens. It's something that those of us who process and sell our venison in the form of burgers and sausages are quite used to having to do.

But to call it a "Culture Celebration Day" and then to ban meat is basically banning whole cultures from showcasing their culinary specialities, which is discriminatory to say the least. The school should be pulled up over that.

Their policy could be argued to be neither inclusive, equal or diverse. They could also be questioned to be pursuing potential discriminatory agendas that don’t meet your daughter’s needs or wishes. Unless you knew the school’s cultural pathway before attending there it maybe worth speaking to a solictor about it if the school stone walls attempts to include other cultural dishes??

Well said.
We only had one lad in our year with an allergy. "Smelly Smith" hated soap.... brought him out in a sweat just talking about it.

I would make them a really nice veg curry and cook it all in ghee and not tell them. I bet they'd lap it up. Probably have a roast dinner that night too

Madness absolutely ridiculous bunch of Fanny’s.

Take a live chicken behead whilst muttering a certain phrase and watch their heads implode with the dilemma of it being meat vs religious intolerance.

Worlds gone mad.

A bag of wheat and a couple of 4 foot stems of bramble. Hunting culture and can't bring meat so take the food the game eat. Squirrel food might be a bit awkward!

How do they know if sesame and nut free vegetarians are in season? Bet they’re easy to stalk though - just listen out for them and when they introduce themselves as vegetarians, pull the trigger, but only with sustainable bullets, made of wood or ice, please…

If my grand children brought something like that back from school the school would be getting a visit from our lad and his wife the next day with some very strong and choice words - And no doubt a few really tasty beef burgers!
