Just wondering if anyone knows, are the CZ 457 LRP action and barrel a better quality /different to the standard 457 with the synthetic stock.
It seems hard to believe they machine an identical looking action to match tolerances and fit a better barrel just for the LRP .
Hi Steve, I have a 457 mtr and did a fair bit of research before purchasing. The mtr and lrp both have the match chamber, I can’t comment on the “standard” barrel as I haven’t shot one , but if you look at the barrel alone costs (McAvoy’s have all them listed -
CZ 457 Rifles)
You’ll see the mtr and lrp barrels are about £75 more which I guess is probably down to a little extra time and qc?
I haven’t used a “standard” barrel, but I can tell you the match chamber is fantastic and with match / ammo the barre likes will consistently do the sub 15mm claimed by cz.
I do however have one issue with the match chamber / the mtr I have, I have done a reasonable amount of ammo testing and found eley match to be super (around 7/8mm groups on average or better), but they are bloody noisy !!! Im mean super sonic 17hmr loud... so with the eley grouping well I tried thier subs, group very well but all go supersonic and as loud as the match.
I wondered if it was a batch issue, so tried a 452 with them and they were sub sonic and quiet... so not the ammo. I think the tight chambering has a lot to do with it, plus barrel length. I discovered after talking with eley direct that all 22lr ammo is tested in 26” barrel, mines the 20” so the billet will technically be leaving faster as from my knowledge and research 22lr begins to slow after around 16”....
cci subs - about 50/50 super / sub sonic
Rws subs - all stay under sub sonic - group about 12mm ish, with the odd flyer out to 20mm.
so in short - match chamber very accurate, but if you want to shoot subs, might not wrk with your preferred ammo.
The 457 has a new action which I believe is very similar to the anschutz match, it’s a preferred action that dolphin guns are making their elr 22lr on, and for the money I think the standard would be great. The upside is that you could always swap the barrels out of you found the standard not to be any good and go to a mtr or lrp one (or a lijia one!!!) and it would still be cheaper than buying the lrp.
I have put my mtr into a oryx chassis and it all works great. I would say if you start with the synthetic you can “build” up from there without really loosing out as you go... just my thoughts having gone through the process.
few pics of the testing between the 457 mtr and the 452 (would say it’s not 100% fair in the match ammo as there was a lot of jumping from ammo to ammo without giving the barrel a few rounds to acclimatise)
