Evening all , I am looking for a new (second hand) Duster as a work and shooting vehicle. So don’t know much about the Duster . Do I go for petrol or diesel. I don’t tend to travel to far , l like the idea of diesel because of fuel consumption but I don’t want management lights telling me I am Mr slow . Your thoughts please 👍🏻

I have an 18 plate Duster diesel 4x4 its good offroad cheap to insure and tax and does about 50 mpg on a run , it’s got plenty of poke in it too I’ve had loads of 4x4s this is the best for all round ability , in this day and age fuel economy is vital plus their cheap so you don’t mind getting them dirty

Mine is a 2013 Duster 4 wheel drive, diesel, plenty of room in the back with the seats down.

Wouldn't take it where I would go with a Landrover but good for cross country track work. Careful if you smack and manage to shear the exhaust though, just paid out £550, (not inc labour) for a new DPF.😭

Will definitely be considering a newer model when this one finally goes to the scrap yard.

I’m with everyone on the comments

Mine is a 1.2 petrol 4x4 as a lot of our mileage is local and in town so we didn’t want to be diesel polluting everyone. Mpg is not very good.

The engine surprisingly tows my fairly heavy boat well.

Probably would have gone for a diesel but generally I’m pleased with the motor.

Annoying bit (minor) is when the service light comes on (also indicates minor problems) and you have to pay Renault or Dacia to turn it off. Mine has been on for years now!

I’m also looking. Called up three in the last two weeks all the 4wd model but for some reason had the 4wd prop/drive removed to make them permanent 2wd. Anyone know how is it to reverse that?

I'd recommend sourcing a 4WD prop and refitting it, that should Hopefully fingers crossed turn it back into a 4WD :-|

I’d be cautious as to why they have been taken out. Lots of old freelanders had that because they were forever having problems. Might have been done for fuel efficiency here but I’d be surprised as you can select 2wd very easily from the cab anyway with a simple selector dial. I think the selector might have gone wrong.

Sorry for interrupting, are you saying that you are able to select 2or4 wheel drive on these 👍🏻

Reconnect the prop shaft . A lot of early Freelanders had it disconnected to increase fuel consumption

I’ve just remembered a discussion with a Duster owner . He had to replace the prop shaft as the cv joint was a complete unit at the time . Maybe this was why it’s been disconnected. He said the newer ones are a much cheaper fix with just a cv joint which also has a grease nipple
