hi has any one used the DFK ir with the alpex lrf and what's your opinion? I am using the dark engine blade with mine at the moment but it seems to dull down and brighten back up.. p.s the battery is fully charged ... I dunno if its a problem with the I.r or not.. but my mates are at me to get one of the DFK units as they can't see past them.. does anyone here have the option to compare them on same night conditions etc and what was your opinions.?

Have you tried turning the smart IR off in the Alpex? This function changes the settings to suit what it thinks is the correct amount of IR. I haven’t had an issue personally but it might be the reason you are experiencing different levels of IR output from a fixed source.
I have not tried turning the smart I.r off.. I will give this a try. thanks

I've got the free IR which you get when ordering the alpex from blackwoods and it does exactly what you're saying with that one. I'm suspecting @Cotswold Sporting is right with the smart IR is causing that.

I ordered the dark engine blade at the same time after seeing some recommendations on here and youtube etc. Just waiting for it to arrive was hoping have it for this weekend.

The free torch will provide a much nicer image allround under 150yds than a Blade, the blade has visible artefacts in the beam, that are visible when viewing through the Alpex.

Smart IR will auto adjust the exposure, I'd recommend turning it off and only using it when IR will bounce off close range objects...

Yeah I was amazed at the quality of the image, I've come from a very old night vision scope and the torch you supplied gave an excellent flood to fill the scopes field of view.

I'm going to pop out tonight and try it with the Smart IR off and see what it's like, however I'm beyond more than impressed with the kit you supplied especially the adjustable torch mount.

You have no need to buy a DFK if you have a "Blade" and it, and the Alpex is working right ?
I have used a Blade, DFK, and Solaris v2 with mine, smart i/r switched on, yes the brightness does adjust its self (thats what its supposed to do to avoid over exposure) but the brightness and picture quality should still be good, (when n/v conditions are good, ie low water content, and background).
To add to the suggestions already, is the Alpex screen brightness turned up ie 8 or more, to get the best i/r performance the i/r must be perfectly positioned, can you borrow another i/r and see if its any different ?

Have used all of the above . The blade is pants in comparison to the DFK and the night saber.
The is the best of the best that I use imho is the night saber Wraith V3 full fat version. and the second which is very close second is the DFK.
Only thing is you would have to contact the builder of the DFK through face ache if you couldn’t buy second hand.
The wraith you can purchase from ludicrous lumens and Andy is a very good seller ( no affiliation)

Just throw another into the mix.
Personally use the irlightbuild Sirius absolutely brilliant light pattern.
Adjustable beam, adjustable power & a small led indicator to show the torch is on.
Will light up further than you will shoot 👍

I have a PBiR on my Alpex 4K and I am having exactly the same issue with the display dulling and brightening in night mode when using the IR. I tried turning off the Smart Ir and it did not seem to make any difference. I also experienced a very similar issue shooting within an enclosed tunnel range in night mode and no IR where only the target was lit with white light 100m away.

Hi Colin,

With the Alpex 4K you should get a good image to 500 yards and a good enough image to 1,000 with the BLADE, so something seems off there.

First thing to check is that the tail cap threads are clean. They can get dirty over time and cause resistance. Give the body and switch threads a good squirt of switch cleaner and see how you fare.

If that doesn't solve the issue, then get in touch and we'll sort it out for you. It has a lifetime warranty.

Cheers

I use a DFK with my 4k Alpex & it’s superb, cannot fault it , BUT the customer service from Lee is even better , which imho is worth its weight in gold , nothing is to much trouble for him , highly recommend it 👌

I have a blade on my Alpex 4k, good for range but i am not shooting foxes at 400 yards, mostly 100-200 yards.

can anyone suggest an IR more suited? i do have the free IR torch that came with the Alpex from blackwood but that is designated to my air rifle

thanks
