My long awaited trip up Scotland stalking (and my DSC1 yesterday) has come to an end.
arrived thursday and got on a range. some sweet grouping so feeling confident!
1st stalk 1st morning 3am alarm. arrived at our spot. wanderd up a fresh cut silage field 10 minutesiin, 3 big Red staks on the edge heading for cover. so.. got down on the grass, eyes on the deer. bloody nervs and excitement hit me here.. pulled the trigger.. BANG.... he ran straight out then wosh.. off in to the trees. MISSED!
F#*k what a way to start the trip.
Evening stalk on the same day. into a high seat. ride to my left and right clearfell bank infront. never seen a sausage!! very relaxing evening though in some beautiful scenery (a world away from screaming toddlers at home)
Last night.. Good walked stalk through forestry block. seen plenty Roe some distance below. but such a still Evening meant they would be gone well before we got in range.. Seen a number of beautiful red hinds with Calves at foot. one Roe buck clearly heard us coming on such a still Evening so buggered off barking.
Walk back to the car presented a roe feeding 75m below us on a very steep bank, couldnt tell if was a doe or buck as it was head down. My guide said get on the sticks so your ready when it lifts. so. i brought the rifle round ready to mount the sticks , at that exact moment..... head up... and pooof. gone like the wind.. another F#*k moment.
Sunday morning (today) one last go... slept crap last night with diffrent scenarios playing in my mind.
3qm alarm again.. (was already up at 2 having a shower) too bloody hot
so. gets picked up at 4am.. raring to go. nervous as hell this time as its my last chance! Heads on out down a track to a hardwood block with barley fields dotted around.
2 deer (roe) spotted on the far bank (about 120mtr) from us. just going about there morning. clearly established the buck on the right and was now once again mounting the sticks. found him in the crosshairs. My heart was pounding so hard now now i could hear it .So took a second to calm myself at ease. saftey off and BANG..... He run straight forward 30yds forward into the crop (my instant reaction was (NOT AGAIN!!
) Crosshairs still on him in the barley and his neck just flopped back and keeld over.
Walked on in. now buzzing!! good shot placment (fraction back) but clean straight through the lungs.
Hes my forst deer ive shot. so my personal opinion is hes absolutely stunning. head and carcass!! weighed on the hook at 22kg. (means bugger all to me as ive never weighed one) but told thats heavy for a hook weight.
Now officially have the Stalking bug for real!!
