Having watched plenty of north America "hunting" (stalking) content I was keen to get my hands on a scalpel blade type detachable blade knife to help in the skinning/butchery process. I've got sharp knives which I can manage to resharpen as required. So this was impulse rather than pressing need.
I recently had the opportunity to pick up a Gerber Vital Fixed (as opposed to folding) Detachable Blade knife to try and I really wanted it to work. There was appeal in the large orange polymer handle rather than the slimline alloy "pukka scalpel" knife handle.
All I can say is thank goodness for reliable retailers with no-quibble money back terms. The handle and the blade locking arrangement might have coped with cutting through stamp hinges or slicing gently through hair but the neck skin of a deer? No way Hose! Pressure on the edge of the blade pushed it out of fixing so it just wasn't safe, it wasn't fit for purpose.
