Digital over ear protection

what do people use and what is good?

love the idea of CENS hunters but at £600 its a bit rich for my blood

Got a brand new pair of MSA Supreme Pro-X here which I find the ear-cups just a bit too small on. You're welcome to borrow them & see how you get on with them as I only use them in the summer on the range. They are very good (especially in the wind), just a bit snug for me. When I'm moving around I prefer a lighter, slimmer option. In Edinburgh most days.

I use MSA also I didn't experience the problems that McKenzie had but that's not to say hes wrong and its kind of him to offer you the loan of them.
I fine them great and use them whilst woodland stalking.

Yep. Used Peltor for years and superb cans. Shop around for prices though as I have seen them range from £85 to £130. Battery life is great and they are comfortable enough to wear for hours at a time

MSA Sordin for me. With the gel ear pads/seals they are really comfy!
I tried the Peltor but found they clonked the stock (shotgun) each time I put the gun up, so moved them on.

Check out Etymotic Research. They have an expensive option for hunters. However, I use a cheaper pair used by drummers that want to lose the pop but still hear the music.

It always amazes me that people will spend thousands on a Blaser and more thousands on the best Swarovski scope but when it comes to your ears a few hundred quid is too much!
I see hundreds of people a year with hearing loss or tinnitus because of noise damage. Once it's gone its gone. Buy the best you can afford. Speak to experts in the field (audiologists) and get fitted ear pieces for stalking/game shooting. Buy the Deffenders with the best sound attenuation for the range/clays if it doesn't state it find out from the manufacture, they have to state it. On range days also wear sponge ear plugs then put the defenders on.
This is not a dig at the OP and I am sorry if they think it is, it is rather a wake up call to everyone who shoots without some form of ear protection.

Sound advice (sorry) as I sit here now listening to my tinnitus though years of shooting and Rock music with no protection.

I use the Peltor Pro Tac as well and they are excellent. I have started wearing them whilst lamping out of the truck too. I got a cracking deal on them from the USA.

Price isn't everything. I had a pair of Silverline Electronic Ear Defenders that had a slightly higher Db reduction than my Peltors but what you pay for is the quality of the electronics. Peltors dip out the shot sound and return to normal quicker. But for £120 price difference you take your pick. My daughter stole my Silverline defenders and uses them now.

You can get these on eBay for £20 delivered and they are a bargain.

And regardless of the advertised Db reduction they need to fit well or they won't do the job properly; try them on rather than mail order.

I use the Howard Leight Impact Sports, as it appears are an increasing amount of people at Bisley, very nice and comfortable and despite what some claim with the more expensive headsets, do exactly the same job. Just prefer to look like a shooter, rather than someone in a Formula One pit lane.

Totally agree and I rarely if ever pull the trigger without some form of hearing protection. Even with a moderator the crack of the .222 in a built up or forest environment can be unpleasant without plugs
But range days and hill stalking I am happy wearing industrial strength cans as time allows them to be fitted
its the woodland stalking that is my issue as wearing them permanently removes my best form of detection...my ears!

The cost consideration comes in on the electronic ones where hearing and attenuation need to be considered. otherwise HSE grade peltor cans are cheap and the best foam plugs I have are NoiseX from the chemist at £2 for 4!

I still have some tinnitus from any kind of manual work involving noise that I have done over the years, whether it be grinders, hammers or engines
shooting without plugs or cans is just adding to the degradation of hearing
