Wanted: Discussion - Duck flighting fee’s

Yes I to have sat out on Fenland drains and shot extremely wild ducks. But I certainly wouldn't pay that money. It was many years ago and I'm probably like many older shooters and pick my moments carefully nowadays

A flight pond was recently advertised near me for £500 p.a. plus grain at harvest spot price. The farmer was willing to feed up to daily at a cost of £12 per day fed. A purpose designed an well known pond with wooden hides. I think there was a lot of interest. All wild birds.

When I sold evening flighting on my own pond back in the 1990s I used to charge an all in price of £60 for the flight up to a maximum of three "guns". That's not £60 per gun but £60 for the flight. Regardless of the number shot. There was no charge per bird. These were wild inland duck, mostly mallard with some teal and widgeon plus the odd shoveller. If we see that £100 in 1995 is worth £225 in 2022 then I'd say £135 for the flight and as I did in the 1990s allow the "guns" to keep two birds each.
Your £100 in 1995 is surely more like nearly £400 today.

It's what the internet said. Mind I also read my horoscope on the internet so, yes, not everything on the internet is always correct.
I’m just thinking my Mother’s house was valued at £80k in 1996, now easily £450k+
I know housing has outperformed many other investments in this time but it seems to double every 10 years and balance out over time.
Five years ago I’d have agreed that £35/duck was a lot but we have to get used to this new situation where a box of weetabix is £6.40, mongrel puppies are £1200 and a pint in the pub is £6.

Doesn’t mean we have to buy this stuff, but that’s what other people are paying.

I’m not surprised he had a lot of interest!

We charge £50/gun, normally 3 guns to a pond, then if they don’t have a dog £100 for me to pick up after. Aslong as the charge covers the feed and estate gets some money in their pocket every one is a winner.

Sounds fair. Exactly that, everyone’s got to cover costs and make a bit of money

Spoke to a chap who I have picked up for with my dogs, £50.00 a gun on a fed lake 4/5 guns.
He counts the duck coming in also often geese so mixed bag.. if he clicks over a good 150 coming in then calls those who want to shoot. take what you have shot. lasts abt an hr

We just paid £80 per person flighting wild ducks. 4 people on a decent sized bit of water.
Couple of us had dogs but there was also a guy with some spaniels picking up. No extra charge and all birds shared out evenly.

I´m charging 1000 euros (this is in Finland) for an evening for 4-6 guns (the opening day is a bit more expensive). The price includes picking up and the shooters can have all the birds. The input I make is predator control, feeding, maintaining of hides (the hides makes it impossible for the shooters to shoot each other) and there has to be at least two guys (and one dog) at every hunt. The hunt is on wild ducks. Anyone want to have a try? :)

Out of interest, what would be an average number of ducks to take in an evening with competent shots? And what species?

Haven´t counted the average number of ducks in a hunt, but the average shots taken per person would perhaps be 20 (rough estimate). The species are (90 %) mallard, teal, wigeon (at some point of the autumn and migration), goldeneye and some other odd species.
Talking about competent shots. I remember a group of five guys, shooting with double barreled shotguns, that got 19 ducks during the two first flights - that´s one miss or one duck double shot!
