DIY glazing

Kind of. I was too tight to buy this so I ordered some polycarbonate sheets at the right size and used foam tape to stick it in place over the winter. It was meant as a stop gap until the single glazing was replaced with double glazed sash windows. We decided to move instead so it's going to be someone elses problem soon.

Without having a perfect seal it fogged up a bit but the room was definitely warmer.

Having covered this during my time at college (back in the day), any actual saving in heating costs would be minuscule and far less than the cost of installing it. By calculating the u-value of such a setup and comparing it to just a single pane of glass you can work out what the saving is, and it is surprisingly close to zero. The feeling of the room being warmer is largely perceived although it may cut down on some drafts if the glass isn’t perfectly sealed.

If you have single glazing and upgrade later on by having the window frames replaced then you will never recoup the expense, but if your existing frames are able to accommodate a sealed double glazed panel then savings can be made. Secondary glazing without the vacuum between panes does not make a big enough difference though.

Double glazing only works because of the vacuum, the insulation value of glass is next to nil on its own so adding a second, or even third layer makes virtually no difference.

Look at your flask as an example, two very thin laters of stainless steel that without the vacuum in between would not keep your drink warm for very long, take the air out from in between and it will stay hot all day.

Yes makes sense.
