As per title wondered if roe deer and muntjac in particular would graze young new planted Norway spruce? Planted 50 3-4ft new trees in my wood 2weeks ago no sign yet just getting bit nervous after spending a lot time money on them thanks

Not particularly. They’re only slightly more palatable than Sitka.

Have you planted the trees to attract deer?

I don’t know much about muntjac mind.

Unlike sitka spruce, Norway puts down a deeper tap root, which gathers the trace elelments washed down from the topsoil by slightly acidified rain, and thereby out of the reach of the grass and other shallow rooted vegetation.

And they're a native European plant, and a softer, more tender chew for the deer.

Best get that high seat up sharp-ish! 24hr protection a better idea.

Thanks for the relays there Not planted to attract the deer no Just replanting a part off a wood But might work in my favour I’ll get the high seat and rifle ready thanks

In 20 odd years of doing forestry damage assessments on replanted conifer, it’s been my experience that Norway Spruce is the least bothered ‘soft conifer’ of all of them. You’ve bought some pretty big trees so they’ll not be bothered for very long. Trouble is, it sounds like you’ve planted a fairly small area in a woodland which will probably end up a favourite feeding spot! Can’t harm to have a sit in a high seat.
