Do I cut down the barrel on my 22-250 or buy a short 223

I had a heavy barrel rem. 700 22-250 cut down from 24 inch to 18 inch for a similar reason , there was no noticeable difference to accuracy and gun smith chronographed it and it had only dropped about 300 fps. And with the moderator I couldn’t tell any difference but if you have an inch for a .223 then scratch it

They are chalk and cheese as calibres.

My 22250 was very quiet when it was 26 inch long

It’s barky now it’s 22
Yip depends on where you fire the rifle. Near trees it can be loud even with jet-z moderator. Then sometimes not, especially on a close fox.

You won’t be able to take it down meaningfully without significant sacrifices in terms of noise, ballistics and muzzle flash - a 16” .223 makes more sense, especially if you’re not a reloader

Hi guys in the end I found out that at my local gunsmith it wasn’t expensive to get it cut down so it’s currently getting cut down to 18” and I home load so should be able to recover some speed but not too worried. but if it dosent work then I’m just going to get it rebarreled in a 6mm calibre, probably 6 creed

Should be circa £100 quid cut and re crowned.

Who did you use to cut it down?

After cutting it down I and testing loads I still managed to get my 69gr tmks at 3350 which I was happy with but I did have a fall in accuracy and couldn’t manage to get any load under about 1.5” so in the end I’m just going to get Steve Kershaw to spin a 6 creed barrel on there because I think it will be a better calibre for what I need and I’m gonna get my 243 rebarreled at the same time

I would take some advice on cutting it down, but would not go below 20inch.
It will still be flat and fast and better than 223.

Alternativly get a 243.
