Dog joint supliment recomendations

Do they work? Are they worth the cost? Injection or liquid? My lab is 9 and has had a fairly full working life his heart is still 100% committed but he is struggling the next day after a full day so wondering if I can make it a bit easier on him for what's likely to be his last full season

We bought some YuMOVE for our older cocker. We tried it for a week or so before we had to move her on to Royal Canin Gastro-Intestinal Low Fat dog food (which, from the cost, I always expect to be delivered by Securicor accompanied by police outriders!)

I can't say I noticed any real difference from using it, but to be fair it barely had a chance to make any impact.

If the OP is thinking more of veterinary treatments then we have always found Metacam to be excellent. All our older labs and cockers have been on it.
 
I have used joint aid for dogs for many years, makes a real difference.
I first used it on one of my old police German shepherds, thought I was going to have to retire him early but after trying joint aid he worked another 2 1/2 years and 4 years retirement!
I routinely give it to all my dogs since (about 13 years) and never have real arthritis/joint problems.
You need to be using it for a reasonable period before you see results, a week or two won't make a difference.
 
There is very little hard evidence to support the use of these products and most is people's observation. Arthritic pain fluctuates (as many of us know) and a fit, correct weight animal wil be able to support its weight better (just like humans). There is also the "care-giver placebo" where you wnat to see an imporvement, so you do. Vets are also susceptible to this!! I'm no exception to this, being convinced that Cartrophen helped my old dog with mild arthritis.
There is a degree of plausibility in the products as they contain chemicals found in cartilage, although as most are proteins, I don't understand how they are suppossed to get past the digestive system.

The only stuff that works are the products aimed at reducing pain and inflammation and that's where your vet steps in. 9 years old, is when you expect to see some wear and tear.
 
My sister used to give her ageing greyhound turmeric tablets in his food and was impressed with results. Not too pricey as something to try. From what i've read it is good at reducing inflammation. Believe the active ingredient is the curcumin?
She bought 'dog' ones, but ingredients appear to be the same as what H&B are selling - see which is cheapest!
 
I have purchased some of them yumove tablets so will see what happens and let you know. I shan't be falling for the care for placebo effect either not expecting miracles but some help for the boy would be good
 
The Belgian Shepherd of a friend was walking on 3 legs due to arthritis at three years old.11 months of veterinary treatment had made no difference. 2 weeks on Yumove and it was back on 4 legs as if nothing had ever been wrong.
Local vets are now prescribing it!
I take Musselflex tablets every day since NZ Green-lipped Mussel extract was recommended to me after I broke my leg and ankle in three places 8 years ago.
 
Tried Yumove on my 10 yr old GSD for 2 months, if it made any difference it was not noticeable. Friend with an elderly GSD had the same experience.

If it works for your dog, brilliant, but don’t hold your breath.
 
The dog in my avatar (who will be 14 this October) started with arthritis in her back legs when she was about 8, and initially I thought that was it for working her. Vet suggested trying Yumove advance alongside Loxicom - and it resulted in her being able to carry on for a further 3 years before she retired (....an utterly deranged spaniel took over......).
Whilst it wasn't overnight, the improvement once we started the treatment regime was really quite quick and very noticeable.
This obviously wasn't just Yumove in isolation, but thought I'd give you my experience of using it in conjunction with Loxicom which I don't think anyone else has mentioned yet.
 
I’ve got a Doby x Rotty who suffers.
He was struggling after longish walks and always very stiff.
I was sceptical about Yumove but thought I’d give it a shot for him.
Bl**dy hell, he was back to being like a puppy within two weeks.
It works for him.
 
+1 for you move worked wonders on my old spaniel. I even thought about taking it myself he was like a pup again.

They say it takes about 3 months to really see the benefits. I have a 10yr old going on 6, she’s been on YuMove for last couple of years and is very active.

i use glucosemine and chondroitn and cod liver oil stops my nackered knee weather forcasting from zipvit they do a dog version i think its only the label thats different
