Dog travel within the UK

Today’s latest bit of EU nonsense - all dogs, including assistance dogs, being taken between GB and NI now require a Pet Passport and proof of rabies etc. jabs.

Today on the BBC News a govt spokesperson said “We have ensured there are no changes to the current pet travel rules for entry into Great Britain from Northern Ireland, and are working closely with the Northern Ireland Assembly to ensure a long-term solution which supports pet owners and assistance dog users entering Northern Ireland. We will continue to press the EU commission on awarding GB Part 1 listed status, recognising that achieving this would alleviate some of these new requirements.” Soooo if I read this govt-speak right a blind person travelling from NI can take his assistance dog to GB but cannot bring it back without said Pet Passport and proof of Rabies etc. jabs! Even worse although we have left the EU (where?) we have to ASK the now disconnected and unelected Commission for permission to travel with our pets within the UK? You really could not make it up!

I feel somewhat ashamed at how we have betrayed Northern Ireland during the Brexit process.

On the plus side, it might make it harder for pikeys shipping hundreds of stolen dogs over there

Bit naive I fear. A lot of dog smuggling in both directions for many years and much worse now because of the daft prices now - smuggling by its very nature thwarts all checks!

Yeah but before they weren't smuggling them they were just blatantly taking them to and fro, granted some will still be smuggled through but it will surely cut down the scale of it

I think you will find that “smuggled” dogs travelled through Irish ports like Dublin rather than British ports such as Belfast and Larne old son.

Think then what would happen should any MOD dog need to travel to or from Northern Ireland . Apparently the MOD must now inform the EU and NATO on the transfer of ANY assets to Northern Ireland!!

I thought they had this all sorted with this alleged fantastic deal they got? Sounds like they have a bit more negotiation to do yet.

I should write a joke book on All these new abusurd rules for the future generations to have a good laugh at.

It just goes on and on. Seeing dog puppies now cannot be sent to NI yet it is fundamental to their bonding and training that they are homed at an early age. If this country is going to deny “visually impaired” folk as part of the Gove miracle then what hope is left for us all?
