Dometic camper van awning help

Hoping that the SD experts can help me with this one please?

Chap I work with has a VW Transporter with a Dometic wind out side awning, he isn't mechanically minded & is struggling with a problem with it. Back story, he let his son & daughter in law borrow it earlier this summer & he can no longer get the awning to lock in once it's wound in.

When he winds it in he needs to have external assistance in the form of someone putting gentle pressure on the outside piece of the awning. However, when it gets to the point it should lock in the handle turns & what I'm assuming is a bevel gear jumps teeth & wont lock in.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to do a diy repair on this mechanism & where it might be possible to buy the parts? - he didn't me a favour recently so if I'm able to find out how to fix it & get the bits I'd like to sort it for him.

TIA.

Because he is having to assist the awning being wound back in it sounds like it could be an issue with the hinged arms. They fold in as the fabric is being wound back. Have a good check of them to see if one or both could be damaged. Easily done if awning left out during a windy night. 🤔

Thanks, I've not seen the awning open but have witnessed him opening & closing a couple of feet & it sounds to me very much like the bevel gears in the winding head are fooked & jumping.

Had a chat with my brother in law who deals with VW's and campervans. He thinks the awning mechanism could be knackered, there are facebook groups that could help. If he types in VDubbers then a few will come up. Apparently this isn't an unheard of complaint and replacement parts are available!

@opticron1 thanks mate - that's my thoughts, bevel gear tf'd. The guy (like me) doesn't do Facebook so any pointers on where to get a parts diagram & spares suppliers would be very much appreciated 👍

Bought a caravan and went on holiday with the wife and kids. Putting the awning up nearly resulted in divorce. Came back off holiday and sold the caravan. Still married.

Just had a quick scan around - The Motorhome Workshop in West Sussex might be an option or Camperking in Warwickshire. There's also The Awning Co. in Bolton, but probably a bit too far away.
