Driven shoot picking up dog.

I like the Joe Irvine books - quite old school
but if you follow it you end up with a decent dog

I must confess i found joe's books hard to read, been a long time since i read them right enough. but a lot of folk do like joes books so possibly a personal thing?

Not doubting wot was written in them, as they're is no doubt he could train a dog
Met him a couple of times when i was young, althou have to admit i never knew who he was

Interesting - I found them really easy to read and flowed well, following a logical progression. Funny how different people find things.

He is a bit ‘traditional’ - for example you have to make sure your wife understands that when she is cooking, washing etc that she needs to be patient with the puppy 😳.

Important thing is to read the book(s) now and don’t try to work along at the same time as training. Read the whole thing and then work through it so you know what’s coming next

I think i'll have to dig them out and reread them as i seem to be in the minority. it would be a long time since i read them

I think the book i liked was james dougluas? think called retriever training or something, much the same as every other book written but i thought it was well written and simple to understand

The basics will be much the same in any book really, perhaps some of the more modern might touch on even more postive or even treat based/clicker training which would never be mentioned in older books.

1 thing i learned a lot doing was volanteering to throw dummies for the local gundog club tests, good way to see the dogs working up close, how the better dogs handle wind/scent and how their body lanuage changes ( good to see a massive variety of dogs instead of just reading ur own) and also the massive difference between how the better trainers handle their dogs compared to the poorer.

If you can find a copy of Retriever Training by Susan Scales you won’t go far wrong. Been out of print a while but has a lot of input from the best dog trainers I have ever seen, the likes of Eric Baldwin and Frank Clitheroe.
