Dumping of shot pheasants

The way to shoot pheasants and partridge with any class is only shoot as many as you want to dress and eat .
in the head with an air rifle or 22 LR .
Otherwise it's purely killing for fun like fox hunting .
Thousands of birds get dumped every season .
Who wants pulverised rotting meat full of lead .

What a lot of horlicks you do talk. Considering that you can get as many dead game birds as you like from a local shoot then shooting them in the head with a rifle is purely killing for fun and certainly cannot be classed as sport.

I finished being involved with large shoots several years ago now.
I was saddened by the lack of any interest in the shot birds by those whome shot them. For over a decade an old gamekeeper friend and I have been pondering the unsustainability of the commercial shoot.
My ever decreasing ground to shoot over is partly due to abstaining from the large estates around here that have syndicate shoots with large counts of birds. The few small shoots where I hope the birds are treated with respect once shot are fully manned.
All my personally shot birds are cooked or dressed and given to friends. I don't just plonk shot birds on folk in a pretense of generosity!
You appear to forget that these same guns are often putting considerable money into the local economy. The hotels etc would often be deserted in the winter months if it wasn't for shooting parties. The Hospitality industry would be lost and many local jobs would go with them. How many birds can one man eat? Doesn't stop everyone in the local area getting free protein though!

In no way I campaign against it. Its just something I no longer wish to be involved with.
Don't get me wrong, I had some wonderful days on many a shoot.
But as time went by I felt removed from a bird I always admired.
Now I just keep the vermin down and hunt the birds that walk on me from off local shoots. They tend to be quite smart by the time they get to me!
I also pursue them with muzzleloaders including flintlock for an added dimension. Now I can appreciate everyone I get. Only 20 birds this year, 18 cock birds, 2 hens. I generally leave the hens and look for wild broods in spring and summer. That brings me immense pleasure.

I'm not responsible for local businesses sorry.

Everyone loves a comedian, or perhaps we have an anti in our midst, looking to stir things up.

Then again, just looked at your intro, Swindon, explains it all 😂

You have pretty narrow horizons if you find shooting pheasants or partridges on the ground with a scopes rifle a ‘hunt’!
No different to shooting deer that are standing still. Stalking and head shooting pheasants with a 22 is a much better hunt than driving them over a line of guns.
I always shoot pheasants when they're either on the ground or in the trees (depending on the time of day). It's a very sensible way to do it.

This is a silly beater or someone who breasted out some birds and chucked the resultant carcasses down a well. Silly, but hardly anything that’s going to rock the world. How many times do unscrupulous deer shooters abandon grallochs and other bits of deer wantonly?

It might result (again) on a discussion about driven shooting’s merits. But the only real issue here is why didn’t that silly person simply chuck the birds out with his trash?

It takes all sorts I guess.

It's a shame we have such a disconnect in this country with eating anything that doesn't come prepacked from a supermarket. Our cock day resulted in 31 pheasants and to be truthful hardly any of the guns shooting that day wanted to take a few birds, I did give the surplus away to folks that would enjoy them (that took some time/driving) our local game dealer hasn't been paying anything much all season, nearly everything they used to take went to Europe, but not anymore! Any carcass/roadkill I get goes on to the bait station for the foxes, gotta make life as easy as you can :tiphat:

In all honesty if I want a bird for the pot and am out with a rifle I have no problem taking one. Two of mine were taken thus this season.

Disagree on the basis that pheasants are pretty stupid and feel safe around humans unless you get particularly close, even wild ones, so there is no real stalking involved. Deer on the other hand are likely to disappear at the sight, sound or smell of a human which makes it more challenging.

As for it being ‘better’ than driving them over a line of guns, that’s just your opinion which you are entitled too but the vast majority of pheasant shooters would disagree
