Dunblane: how Britain banned handguns

It is impossible to legislate against insanity so banning any type of weapon is pointless.
The person should have some sort of effective mental health and personality test. Successful applicants should then have a license to possess a certain number of firearms with secondary level applications should they have a legal need for more.
Why a certain number?? Is a person any more dangerous with 10 firearms vs 5? You are either sane or not - the number is not the issue.

If you want high numbers in domestic properties then the security expectation is higher. A standard grant should allow for standard security requirements.
How does the " expectation" rise?
Is it a linear expectation or compounded?

Access to one firearm by an unauthorized person is no different to them gaining access to twenty, no?

Well I suppose if someone were to nab 20 firearms they'd be able to arm their whole gang, so I think it is a bit different, and I can understand the increased security expectation where large numbers are concerned.

Reactions: WW.
I remember watching a programme on the gangs in this country; there were so many of them carrying handguns, it was unbelievable.

They were not old rusty things, but what looked like brand new automatics. Surely, they should have been the ones targeted, not licensed, legal gun owners.

Ahh I see yes.
I thought the context was a single person owning firearms, we were discussing Hamilton originally etc.

It may be a pipe dream but I still have hope that perhaps with the right government we may get .22 handguns back (perhaps with a stipulation that they be kept at clubs, similar to the original 1997 Act).

I distinctly remember the immediate footage after the event.
The school glass windows had bullet holes in them!
It is my belief and others that the police tried to shoot Hamilton through the glass.
If correct your imagination can do the rest!

I would not be at all surprised if it wasn't all Hamilton's shots that harmed children!!

Hamilton got his license via the chief constables connection with the free mason's and possibly homosexual relationships.

The chiefs staff sent over 50 memo's requesting Hamilton's licence be revoked but they were ignored.
The chief got early retirement and nothing else.

Since Dumblane do I trust the establishment or authorities? Not one bit.
Not just early retirement but reportedly spirited off to Australia under an assumed name. The police & civil service have an awful lot to answer for!

i surrenderd a six shot 357 magnum sw revolver, same day they paid me my compensation money, i went and bought a 10 shot 357 magnum lever action rifle
See post #34. I could have expanded on my thought process but figured it would not be necessary.

All thes debates about the handgun ban take me back to a crisp Autumn morning in the car park of Sevenoaks Police Station having just surrendered mine. The chap ahead of me in the queue was getting back into his car and clearly felt compelled to say something. I wish he had refrained as my hackles still rise whenever I recall his 'optimistic' pronouncment:

"Don’t worry, they'll never take the long ones"
