Elusive foxes

I’ve had a usually quiet lambing this season.
Normally when the lambs are first out I expect to find foxes sitting out looking over the flock, or mooching about those fields. This year it’s been very scant on both our lambing and friends. Shot a few, but nowhere near the usual numbers - being two different areas I wonder whether they had a bad year or something as usually my numbers are relatively consistent year on year.

Lower numbers about here not seen as many this spring.
Putting it down to more people out after them nowadays.
Vixens will be in the earth now with young cubs though should see them now in May.

Ive had 10 this month on our lambing farm south west scotland. all on our farm and I know there are a few more. got this vixen the other night and knew it was eating something but got a shock when I found the lamb. It was an older lamb too. approx 2 weeks. Vixen had some interesting mouth wound too.

Adults with cubs to feed are hunting hard my way, hunting up the hedges and woodland hoping for ground nesters, and searching open fields for leverets, they seem pretty wired at this stage of the game to me. Got a vixen to knobble on our patch, I got the dog a few nights ago.
I guess if you are not seeing them, you've done a good job, I'm sure as soon as the cubs start getting moved to a clean earth you may get some more...

Just seen 2 on the move about half hour ago usual run under hill from cover.
Plenty of rabbits about too.

Nothing jumping round here at minute. Weird last night, no fox, rabbits, hares, nothing. Heard a muntjac that was it.

Mate and I are usually out at least once a week looking for Charlie and we had our first sighting (and kill) since Xmas only last Friday evening. Admittedly, we have fairly spanked them on our permissions and they are now much fewer and far between than they were, but to go so long before even seeing one is rare.
