Empty night..........

crow killer

Well-Known Member
Had a wait tonight, thoroughly expecting to see some foxes, but not a one seen, some road kill had all been eaten last week, and more put out yesterday, I got into my sheep field shelter, just after dark, travelling there on my quad bike, pickup yoked up to trailer ready for loading lambs in the morning,, the bait was out about 60 yards away, had my tikka 243 night force scope and pard 007 on, Pulsar thermal spotter around my neck, constantly looking around expecting a fox any time, nothing much was seen tonight, normally theres a couple of hares, I did see an owl probably a barn, flying over the rushes a couple of times, heard a tawny calling in the woods , and a badger was probably feeding on worms seen about 900 metres away, it was working about in the same area for most of the time, .
Tonight the weather was kind, no wind and not cold, I sat till nearly half past nine and decided to pack it in. No sign for any encouragement unlike other times when usually a few foxes are seen, even if they dont come near.
I whats apped a friend and ate a couple of biscuits. The sheep were mostly lying down quietly, my rifle was loaded with the very last 2 rounds re loaded by my old friend the late Old Cull Stag, Hubert Hetherington of Penrith, behind them im now onto some factory ammo, V Max, Hubert was a great re loader, I miss him greatly. .......

Sorry for the loss of your friend, I know the feeling, I lost my mate 3 years ago,he had mentored me 40yrs ago and did so till the end.
Been out tonight for a couple hours, they are pairing up in kent, we took 5 between two of us, 2 dogs, 3 vixens, Jesus I like Deuce!!!

Morning, thank you, its over 6 years since Hubert died, he was a regular contributor on this site, a tremendous font of knowledge on many things, and a very experienced stalker of all species.

From a previous time. God rest Hubert.
I was born in 1933 and the first deer I ever shot was a Red stag. [ In 1963. ]
That beast was a tineless switch type waster.
My second that same year is here below.
I soon found out that wellies were not suitable for steep, stony mountains such as Rough Side, Kirkstone Pass, Cumbria.
HWH.

I only met Hubert once, by this time he was getting on a bit. What a character. Loved his stories, and his trophies.
The man was a legend. May he rest in peace.

I had dozens of cups of tea at his house, always had a laugh, told plenty of jokes and recollections from his experiences, he was very keen on long range corbie bashing, and had a long driving circuit around Ullswater and Matterdale, he shot about 150 pa, very very good rifle shot and a champion at clay shooting.
