Wanted: Estate car- runabout

I’m looking for an estate car/ runabout. May look at audi a3, merc estate or what have you. Needs to be good on fuel. Budget around 6k

I was in your position 18 months ago, i ended up with an Octavia VRS estate.

I had a look at few other things but a friend who's a mechanic said there's a reason every other taxi driver has a diesel Skoda. Regularly serviced they just don't go wrong. He's seen a few on 350k+

Just make sure you do the timing belt and water pump at slightly shorter intervals than recommended, eh @sauer

Gonna be advertising my freelander 2 before too long. Sat idle since I picked a jimny up recently.

Won't be anywhere near as good on fuel as an octavia mind!

I had a 14 plate octavia diesel estate . Absolutely loved it, we would get 50mpg on a decent run. Changed it for a discovery as we needed more space due to kids. Horrendous maintenence costs and appalling mpg. But bigger and more comfy. A wise man once said to me if you own a land rover always make sure you have a warranty on it.

Anyone got experience with an Audi q3? It’s a diesel Quattro 12 plate. I have a pickup so don’t need it for heavy work. Just when the guys are using the pickup gives me something to run.

Same platform as the skoda yeti. Good solid set up. Just the usual stuff to look out for including haldex and bevel box have been serviced.

They were built at the Audi Hungaria plant in Győr, Hungary.

I've used my VW Passat Alltrack for stalking duties for around 2 years then retired it to commuting duties.
I've had it for 4 or 5 years now putting 65k miles on it. It's sitting at 143k miles on the clock.

Loads of room inside for anything you need plus a few deer if you want.

I would recommend 1 no probs. Still going strong
Averaging 52mpg

Honestly mate I have thought of it a few times.

Then say to myself, what am I going to buy that's going to do any better.

All I'll achieve is being £10k worse off in the pocket for no more gain on a newer car.

There are a few on Auto trader at the moment from up this way.

Myself personally I always buy my cars from down south due to having less exposure to salt.

Yea, had a look, didn’t see any alltracks. Holding their price too

Had two A 3 sportbacks

Both returned 55-58 mpg with regular maintainence they are cheap and reliable cars

The first - 1.9 TDi needed an abs module repair - simple to get out and send off to be professionally refurbished

Other than that zero issues

Second was 2.0 TDi (150 bhp)

Very reliable mile eater

Like Colin , I have a Passat Alltrack - 150 bhp - 2017

Had some issues with P0299 fault code that took me some time to sort - basically took the whole inlet and charge cool system apart and refurbed it

But it’s reliable and comfortable returning 55-58 mph providing you stay under 70

Really do like the car , two years of ownership and now on 150k having bought it at 80 k

Haldex easy to maintain

Would buy another when the time comes - though considering petrol Outback when replacement time comes if a manual comes up

I’d love an A6 BITDi Allroad, but the V6 is too problematic and spendy (having had an SQ5 for a couple of years too - they can get spendy to fix really quick

No I’m not parting with the Alltrack

I'd be looking to pay not much more than £5.5k on that to be honest.

Octavia acout 2015 in 98;000 miles
Starts losing water every week needs top up
Book in for service get timing belt and water pump done as 1yr over the recommended 10yrs or 100k ( nearly there )

Water pump was literally a bundle of rumbly bits and 99% towards complete collapse. ...got lucky !
So do belts and waterpumps of applicable bit less than recommended

Oh and yes great motor

2016 Superb diesel estate, the one with the 150bhp 1.9 engine..........ours regularly does 60-65mpg on long motorway runs (to Bisley ).
