Evolution of thermal imaging and night vision

I wouldn’t be that pessimistic.

The split between recreational and operational/management stalking will just become more pronounced.

Absolutely nothing stopping people from keeping to traditional methods when doing it recreationally.

It’s like the difference between industrial trawling for fish to feed large populations and dry fly fishing with a split cane rod. They’re completely different things achieving completely different objectives.
I've not heard of shoot and release of foxes, rabbits, rats etc.

I see the decline in field craft, an increase in focus of efficiency of modern equipment, the loss of why we target quarry in the first place. A lack of attention paid to the habits and characteristics of quarry ,a loss of understanding of species ..... eventually leading to tighter restrictions as the general public are able to view what we do because more people post their achievements online.
One problem is that the reason some are targeting deer is because their numbers need to be significantly reduced and the ‘old’ ways with the ‘old’ guard aren’t keeping up with that need. Yes the goal posts have changed but there’s not many places where you can say deer numbers aren’t going up, often drastically and to the cost of habitat and business interests so wandering around and shooting a deer every third outing but having a nice time isn’t just what’s needed from everyone. Yes there’s still a place for it but alongside a more streamlined approach

I've maybe misread the initial post, but I thought it was regarding the future of night vision equipment.
I agree with your comments about deer....if only more people had an appetite for venison.

Venison takes care and attention and some skill to cook well.

Beef steaks you can throw in a pan for a few min each side and have a nice steak.

Do that with venison and you’ll be put off.

Not at all, mince is mince, burgers are burgers, throw some dice in a slow cooker with veggies and red wine, pretty simple and fool proof
