One of several hippos my sons and I have shot on the Luangwa river over a few trips. This one has a third lower tusk. Anyone seen this before - the PH never had

As an aside, no 2 son shot 2 hippo for the presidents funeral feast at Mfuwe as his body toured the country a few years ago

Yes of course. I'm not sure he quite realised the significance as he was 15 at the time. We were on a 2 week hunt with Peter Chipman for elephant when the call came in to supply them and he kindly passed the quota on to us free. Couldn't keep the ivory of course

I believe it is although not seen it. Used to be a great bookshop with African hunting books and bar at the airport - not sure if it still there as switched to Niassa a while back. Also a great camp at South Luangwa aptly named Flatdogs Lodge!

Some great buff hunting around the valley. I saw a herd that must have been several hundred animals crossing the river. Also got a cracking Rowland Ward Warthog the guys had been after for weeks. Will post a pic

I have a pic somewhere of one I photographed in the Kruger. The tusks met and crossed over slightly above the nose. That was a monster. Also saw a Kudu in the non shooting area where we were in Niassa, PH estimated well over 70" Never strayed into our area .....

I remember a US Nat Geo mag from 30-40 years ago of a bull hippo with gob open that had four main bottom canines.I wished I had kept the photo.
