Eye ulcer on my stalking dog

Keep having repeated issues when my dog runs through dense cover in forrestry and manages to scratch his eye and ended up at the vets for fear of him loosing his eye
Was wondering what anyone else does to combat this ?
Thanks on advance 🙏🏻

My cocker lost her eye 3 weeks ago whilst out beating (a stick went straight through her eye) I have seen these doggles & rather than not take her any more will probably invest in a pair so she can carry on doing what she’s bred for & loves doing.
Just be careful of your dog as seeing it & dealing with it is very traumatic.

Yeh that’s how my cocker lost his as well but he was 10 or so at the time

I’ve always used Golden eye from the chemist for most eye irritations and slight injuries.
Same as the stuff from the vets but obviously less than a tenth of the price .

thanks rakeaboot greatly appreciated 👍🏻

For humans, yes
Odd, my edit got lost. If you suspect a thorn injury, get it checked. If the torn has gone deep enough to touch the iris, this can lead to scarring, poor drainage od the fluid from the eye and then glaucoma and potential eye loss.
I have a very low threshold for referral for eyes, having seen too many lost.
If there is any change in size of the pupils or you can see a mark, get the dog checked.

My vet prescribed Exocin antibiotic drops which are licensed for human use but she said it works better than the vetinary equivalent. My springer was on them for 2 weeks , first day was every 4 hours even through the night! All clear now :)

£800 our last visit to vet for what turned out to be a bit of grit in our lab's eye.

Not worth the risk to leave it. They scared us though, telling us he could lose an eye if not dealt with quickly.

I don't let him in ditches or bramble/thick cover now - he just doesn't mind his surroundings enough. Also no head out of the window of the wagon anymore!

Googles are probably a good idea.

I have no experience with googles for dogs, have considered it though after having a bramble sting removed from the eye on my spaniel after a day hunting woodcock.
Lucky we found it, it was only visible when she "side eyed" us.

Never got around to trying googles out though, she is turning 10 now and not running as hot anymore.

"Rex specs" is a brand i know of.
They use them on retrievers when shooting cranes, nasty beaks on those!
