Fallow Bucks casting in March

Last night my brother and I went out for a stalk. I had glassed the area previously and had seen two deer come out of a small woodland at last light. It was too far at the time, to confirm if they were bucks or does.

We made our way to the same spot and as anticipated with the sunsetting, we picked up some movement in the treeline. A Fallow buck with one antler, followed by a second buck who had cast both antlers, came out of the woods into the field.
My brother shot the buck with no antlers and carried out the gralloch. On examining the head, the area of the coronets did not appear red and bloody as I expected it to be. It wasn't until we got the buck back home, I pressed the area of the coronets with my thumb and found it bloody with pus. There was also a bad smell coming from them.
The gralloch revealed no other concerns and the animal was also behaving quite normally until shot.
My question is has anyone else experienced this and is it something we should be concerned about?
Thanks

Sorry no photos, which I now realise might be quite helpful.
