Could anyone on the forum give me some advice about hunting in France, do I need a permit to hunt, I'm hoping to go over and hunt boar, red and Roe deer with rifle,
Any advice would be appreciated

I put this up a couple of years back: not a lot has changed in the French systems since.
Key details: you need a formal invitation letter, membership of the local departement chasse, and recognnised (= French) insurance.

Please let us know how you get on, both bureaucratically and in sporting terms!

It used to be that your UK "equivalent" served as sufficient as it showed that you were competent and safe in gun handling. And what is that UK "equivalent"? It is your UK FAC where the condition that allows you to possess the rifle you intend to use is such as "deer stalking and AOLQ" as that is in effect your "permit" to allow you to "hunt".

The law says this (I quote from the link lowermost below):
  • Your hunting permit issued in France or abroad, or any other administrative document legally considered as a foreign hunting permit.

The French Hunting Association is across the Seine from where I will be this coming weekend 17-20 April...so I might take a stroll across this Monday 20 April for a coffee or early lunch and see what they have and send to you. It depends on the other things I might need to do that morning. Meantime here is there website:

For these purposes it is your FAC with the appropriate conditions, as you quote.
It is the only administrative (= “official”) document we have - DSC etc are not issued by a government agency, so do not count.
That was confirmed to me by the Federation I applied to.

Thankyou too everyone who's gave me information, just for reference I won't be taking a firearm, I'm borrowing my friend's who's got the ground that I'm hunting on, he'll be with me at all times, does this change anything?

You will still need a permis de chasse. And, if on an organised shoot, insurance (and hi-viz)

You do not need a permis de chasse, you can hunt off the back of a UK FAC or shotgun licence.

You need to get registered with the local department FDC Federation de Chasse where you will be hunting and set up for an online validation. Eg here it is FDC66.

Then you can apply for a temporary or annual validation online which will enable you to hunt. If there is a local ACCA in that area, you may need to get papers from them and pay a contribution.

You have to have insurance with a French company usually available with the online validation for around 20 euros per year.

They will want to know:
Name
Address
Date and place of birth
Email address

Presumably if you have a friend there they can help you with the process. I have arranged for a lot of friends to hunt here with me.

Voilà and if you need anything further, let me know.

The possible providers of this are many in France although the friend that the OP is visiting may recommend and particular "favourite" perhaps. AXA, GMF, Matmut, Macif, Groupama and MAIF are but a few.

All are big players in the general insurance industry in France and not at all a man in the back bedroom of a two bedroom house in a town in France you've never heard of. Some of the sites below show prices and most have a contact facility.

Note that from my experience on the UK insurance business that although you may get a "counsellor" who speaks English that it is likely that the actual legal conversation (because it will be recorded and shows the intent of the two parties to the contract) will possibly have to be in French language.

GMF indeed quote a figure of around that 20€ sum but introduce a dog into the conversation and it can triple the price so if you have your own dog best leave it here in the UK and not take it to "hunt" with.

This is a tick box exercise when doing the validation online, nice and easy.

I never insured my Jack Russell 'Bullet' when he used to hunt, any injuries sustained whilst hunting were covered by the club from contributions periodically collected from the members.

Minor injuries are common to dogs hunting boar and most handlers carry staples to close shallow wounds. I have noticed that the boar are getting less frightened of people and dogs over the last few years and are holding their ground and fighting more. Sadly, dog fatalities and serious injuries have become a lot more common as a result.

I don't hunt my current dog Tusk.
