Finding a bitch...

Not a deer dog question, but I have a labrador that is a great family pet and when i've had the opportunity to do gundog training he has great potential and natural ability. He is a pedigree and comes from a working line, but not award winning etc.

I would like to breed from him to have one of his pups and ideally breed with a working pedigree bitch. My question is, how do I go about trying to find a bitch?

I'm not part of a shoot or have particular contacts in the gundog world and i accept that an award winning or high standard bitch owner wont be interested, but hoping there are other options available!

Any advice welcome.

first thing is to get him health tested (hips elbows eyes dna) if all good results then start looking for a bitch

As above health tests should be high on the priorities list, however, unless you have a friend who’s amenable to you using their bitch for similar motives, you may struggle; from the side of the bitch owner (where I am) I wouldn’t just use a-n-other dog, there is no shortage of quality, (by which I mean proven progeny) health tested and proven in the working field stud dogs out there from well established lines and this makes finding good home for the pups much easier. The market for labs is not as strong as it was, it’s harder finding homes for pups, so take all of this into consideration before going down this road. Much has you may want to continue his lines, you may struggle

All of the above plus.....Do you think that you could breed a better pup than you could buy? As a pup buyer you have an infinite choice and can shop around - across the globe. As a potential breeder you have to feel sure that your male will pass on everything that you are looking for - do his siblings, sire and dam all bestow the character that you want to create or is he a 'one-off'? You then have to find a bitch of the same quality, coming from bloodlines of the same quality - and that bitch has to be available to breed from.
I think it would be far easier to 'buy' the right pup than to find a bitch/owner to have a litter and produce a pup for you.

Without wanting to sound like a dick, I doubt that someone with a decent bitch would use your dog. It’s not been used in the field and you breeding for emotional purposes might not be the best thing.

Is the dog pedigreed and KC registered ?
If the answer is NO then you won’t get any further with most breeders.
What lines is he from, show or working?

As all of the above it’s usually bitch owners looking for quality kc reg health tested stud dogs that are proven in field and progeny not the other way round .

It's pretty much all been said really.
And esp wot kieth said
Can u buy better?
Are ur pups likely to improve the breed?

Sometimes I'm not a massive fan of too many folk using too few top stud dogs.
But the fact ur dog doesn't work atoll, won't help
Even if u and ur dog were well known around local shoots and everyone was impressed with how ur dog worked u might of stood a slim chance.
As u would have some word of mouth and a few sold before born.

I'm sure u could find someone who's just looking for a free stud, but there bitch probably won't be worth breeding off.
So ur pup will likely be poorer bred than it father
And then u'll have the same problem again in 5 years and ur pedigree will be even poorer.

Heaps of very good labs for sale.

By time uve done the health checks u could probably have bought a really decent puo.
