First Buck

Been a busy year so far, and especially lately.

Managed to finally get on the DSC1 coarse this Thursday and Friday after 6 months and more of trying, and all went well that end gladly.
I needed this for the syndicate ground I'm getting on, and also for ground that I help a good friend on.

Anyway as thanks for helping my mate he asked to get me out my first Buck. I gladly accepted.

Plan hatched and it was a 4am meet at his before heading to the ground for a look see. Arriving we seen a few deer as soon as we got into the ground, all either Doe's or yearlings though.

We headed up the track and parked up to have a look round and get ourselves ready. We seen a couple of deer at various locations, and a plan was hatched for me to head down a route and meet up after a few hours at a RV. My mate sent me towards some deer at around 500-600 yards while he headed up the hill in the pickup.

I set of down a clear fell and towards the boundary fence around 300 yards away and started to make my way towards a restocked area (oh and by feck the midge were having a feast already).

Movement to my right got me started only to find it was 2 geese. So moved on and turned up towards a hill and set myself for the slog knowing it was going to be rough going mainly due to the ground conditions. So deep breath and took a few steps before looking up to be stopped in my tracks. Dead ahead a deer at around 100-120 yards.

Quick look thru the bino's confirmed a nice Buck and sudden rush of adrenaline.
Sticks set up and rifle set I concentrated on calming myself down with some slow breaths and waited for the shot.
It came and instantly the rifle barked and the Buck folded on the spot.

A memory was made and I was happy with the shot and outcome. Not so much the drag out all the same 😬

Hiya

Thank you for sharing, that memory will stay with you forever and may you have many more too along your ' journey'!

Congratulations! That's a lovely buck, well done. Here's hoping it's the first of many.

I'd love to see it once prepped and bleached?
Aye no probs. I'll post it up in this thread once done. Just need to square off the underside of the skull so that it'll sit nicely on a plaque. Again a tip from my mate who has more than a few medals on his wall.
Then just have it bleached for display

A great memory, I keep a diary of all my outings with notes on weather, location, things that went right / wrong. Great to read years later. Takes you straight back. Well done, a good buck.

Thanks guys.

Yes it's something that I will not forget.
All the better when the plan comes together.

Well done!! Can I say though ,,, if you think the midgets are bad now,, your in for a shock 😬😬, enjoy the journey and look forward to seeing the mount 👍

Aye they weren't in full on midge attack mode, but for the temps and time of year they were having a go none the less.

Worst place I've ever been was up near Loch Awe. Honestly eaten alive with the buggers. 1 got me on the eye lid and near shut my eye over. Came home covered.

Here it is now bleached.

I'll get a plaque for it and have it mounted in the dining room.

Congratulations on your first deer.
I would love to know what meals you have made from it so far , and if the culinary delights were well received by your friends and family.
Did you take pictures to add to the most important of memories and the food pictures thread on this site ?
kindest regards, Olaf
