First mount complete. I think I’ve started something now….

I’ve been meaning to try this for a few years but finally said enough was enough.

Completed my first mount which was a nice muntjac and I was really happy with it for a starting point. I have since done another and have a roe buck cape in the pickle ready for mounting. Lots to learn and perfect but I’ve really enjoyed it.

Really well done looks great 👍

Just curious Shaun In total how much do you reckon It costed you? Something I've wanted to do for years but never gotten around too I have the space now.

What tan, pickle, any shaving or just turned and mounted as is?

I haven’t really tallied it up but I would say somewhere around £70-£80 for the parts. the annoying thing is the import duty etc on the form and glass eyes etc.

Tan came from America as it’s a brush on tan from mckenzies. I may experiment with other options to try and avoid that cost.

Lots of shaving which is time consuming without a fleshing wheel but they cost a fortune.

Hope that helps.

Try Snowdonia Supplies for a UK source of taxidermy sundries. That's one of the places I used to get glass eyes and stuff when I dabbled in taxidermy in my teens.
Not sure if they still do taxidermy stuff, but I think so. They certainly do tanning kits.

Thankyou yes they do still sell some supplies. Did buy one of there tanning kits but it’s dramatically overpriced for what you get. Haven't used it yet.

How was ordering the Makenzie tan? We have incredibly limited options over here one Is LutanFN what Is a water based tan, and the other Is liquatan a brush on compared too the US scene these are really outdated tans now. 👍

I would keep using the Makenzie tan though but perhaps use one of the water based one instead so more capes can be done at once, American products for taxidermy Is by far superior we are a good 20-30 years behind them and If you encounter issues there's always hundreds of posts about the same issue

Just look at our fallow forums on JHT versus Makenzie, there best foums beat our best fallow by a mile and there not even native... (sure ours arent either) but there's way more over here than there!

In my opinion it’s the eyes that make the mount!

I sold all my taxidermy a long time ago, just took up too much room in a small house I now only have two boiled heads that I keep for personal memory because they were special animals, my taxidermist was a friend who now does a lot of South African game because that’s where he was taught his trade, last time I spoke to him he had one client that pretty much kept him busy because he just kept going to Africa and sending the trophies home!
