First optics - Advice needed

Hi guys, just doing the research on what i need to be looking for in terms of optics (whilst im sat waiting for me FAC to come through...).

The world of optics seems vast, and my previous experience is pretty much a mix of iron sights and fixed 4x magnification only. The scope is going to be on a .308 primarily used for stalking across a range of terrains. It seems that something like a 3-12x40 would be a good option for me. From the anecdotal stuff i've read, it looks like you can get a decent scope for around £500, and beyond this you can be paying thousands more for any real noticeable improvement or another 10mins stalking time due to better light gathering. Maybe one day that will be a priority to me but not for my first optic, i just need bang for my buck.

I had a look at an Element Helix 4-16x44 yesterday and was actually reasonably impressed, i think its was about £390 and clearly on the lower end of the spectrum but would definitely be workable. Got me thinking about how much id be looking to spend on one and i think if i can pick up a T3X for about £1000 (lighty used perhaps), then id be probably looking to spend half of this on a scope. For around £500 it seems there's a few options from the likes of Vortex or I can look second hand for something more premium like an S&B or Swaro.

I guess for my use im not going to be doing much long range hunting so probably stuff like return to zero turrets etc are not required, can probably keep it a bit more simple. Id love to get opinions on new vs used pros and cons in this price range?

Someone once told me that you should spend as much on your scope as you do on your rifle.
So I did.
(My rifle cost £150).

Your budget looks to be a bit bigger than mine was, so you've got plenty of choice.
I'd be looking at something like 4-12×50
If you don't want to break the bank then Vortex have a good reputation and an unbeatable warranty.
Or go for 2nd hand, as you suggest.
I'm a Leupold fan, myself.

I have a Swarovski 4-12x50. It will cover anything you’re likely to encounter, has great backup and amazing glass. But be warned, it will spoil you forever.
I’d accept £450 inc postage

Schmidt and Bender 8x56 Klassik - Around £250 second hand and you wont go wrong!

Also Zeiss Conquest V4 3-12 x 56 are worth having - normally around the £500 mark second hand

I have this Hawke in the classifieds if interested:

£125 posted.

It’s a classic euro spec scope ideal for someone just setting out.
