First successful outing with Zulus on my 6.5CM

After having my Zulus on my .22 for the last couple of years for bunny bashing, I found I wasn’t using it much recently. Due to fairly poor last light performance I had from the Element Helix I had on prior and not wanting to spend a fortune on better glass, I decided to use what I already had and put it on my 6.5CM.

I got it mounted set up and zeroed at my local range, but when I took it out stalking that night, I realised that the ballistic table had not properly sync’d, when I ranged the base of a fence post at around 200m and the crosshairs jumped nearly to the top of the post. Luckily I had checked this and no targets had presented themselves that evening.

I got the ballistic table issue sorted a few days ago and so headed out tonight on a fairly new bit of land to me.

Heading up across a couple of fields I could see a group of 5 roe deer on the edge of a wood block at the top if the hill through the thermal. However they were around 350m away with only open fields between us and as I got closer they must have spotted me and ran into the woods.

So I followed the ground down to the right where there is a high seat overlooking some clearfell, but also able to look back up the hill to were I saw the 5 from earlier.

I scanned across the clearfell for a while with the thermal and my binos, not seeing anything, but luckily after about 30mins, one by one the deer from earlier started to reemerge from the woods.

Initially they were skylined, but I could see they were making their way down the hill towards the highseat, so I thought it was just a case of waiting and seeing if they made it down far enough to have a safe backstop before it got too dark.

While I was waiting I used the Zulus to record a video of one of the bucks in the group, which looked like a good head and starting to look like it was cleaning up its velvet.

However as they made their way down I noticed there was a small path back into the woods they were working their way towards. One disappeared down the path, which at this point I could see there was a safe backstop where they were entering the path, so I picked out one of the does to take before she headed down there too. Ranged it at 211m lined up the cross hairs and she dropped on the spot.

Waited a little while in the highseat to see if anything else appeared, but nothing else tonight, so made my way across and got her gralloched and off to the larder.

So altogether very happy with the performance of the Zulus.

Good man - well done. I did the same last month with my V1 and Steyr Mannlicher 6.5x55SE for my trip to Scotland. Despite being there nearly a week the weather was so awful I only got three opportunities for a shot and killed all three Roe out to about 230m (though it was so damned awful the RF didn’t work on the longest shot!) so very happy with the results - these are 2 screen captures from the Zulus videos.

Only today I put the Zulus back on the 22lr and am already thinking maybe I should just have left it on the 6.5!

Mine will definitely be staying on the 6.5, I’m thinking the .22 might go in a chassis and use it for PRS, as its now got my Element Helix on it, which was great for target shooting on the 6.5, if just wasn’t the best at last light.

This past season I have had one fitted on my 6.5x55 . I have been using the ballistic calculator and the furthest I shot a roe doe at 278 yds bang flop.
Since the Arken zulus v1 are now cheap second-hand, I have been looking for another for my .308.
I managed to pick one up last week for £310 posted never been fitted. So set it up and zeroed it today . It shoots 150grn ppu and S+B 110gr blue energy to same point of impact.
Using the range finder it shows the distance but when pressing the lrf again for hold over it comes up with out of range.
We had trouble connecting it to the phone to put the ballistic data in.
Later on i noticed the cross hair on 5 power was high up on the screen. The moving down the screen as the power / zoom was increased
Another zeroing session is needed to set it up
I am really impressed with the zulus

In the spirit of the late great Mealijimmy - on base power (5x) your sight picture reflects how the scope is mounted on your rifle and reflects how “out of true” it is to the bore - if it bothers you MJ has advice on this site on how to correct that with shims. Personally I haven’t bothered because for reasons I know not at 7x and above the reticle self-centres on the screen - the wonders of electronics….

PS
The RF issue - try it only on 5x or 7 - beyond that the RF cross may well be too high on your screen

@pendle My crosshairs on base power are high up on the screen too, I assume because I have it on a 35 MOA base, due to being t for the .22 originally. What base are you running on yours?

As @Foxyboy43 says the RF cross isn’t where the crosshairs are and I have to zoom out to base power to see the RF cross to range, then zoom back in once the ballistic solution is fixed, as I can’t see the cross on higher mag.

You are best bore sighting a Zulus first. That will help keep everything in view when other than low magnification is used. If it means making shims do it. It will be worth it.

The out of range thing can be down to the maximum calculation distance. I think mine is set at 500yds but wish I had done it at 1000.
It could be due to the scope being way off centre.
I love my Zulus but it is a fiddle jumping from one profile to the other. And you have to make sure you see the correct profile at the top of the screen, don't assume it's changed!

Thats a good shout on the ballistic table. I only did mine out to 400m as after that the Barnes TTSX that I’m using are below the speed they need for reliable expansion, though don’t think I would chance shooting any further than 300m at a push.
