Fixed vs variable power scope?

I've got a meopta 7 x 50 with the 4b ret (range finder) on my .308 it's excellent. I was out at last light with my brother in law, I pointed out a fox (what I thought was a fox) about 300m away from our ambush point, he flipped the covers on the scope and his first reaction was "bloody hell, this scopes good!" he praises nothing, so that is just about the best compliment any of my kit has ever got. (the fox turned out to be the back of a pheasant - guess I need some new bino's )

The chap I do all my Stalking with uses a 6x24 Swaro, I use a 3-12x50 Swaro. I like the idea of simplicity with the fixed and most of the time just set mine to 7 or 8 mag, but I like to know that I can get that bit more if needs be. T

At £2500 for that scope its hardly fair to compair it to a fixed power scope? Not on the S&B website though is it discontinued ?

Perfectly fair to compare them at comparable magnification though....

Depends on what else you plan to use your rifle for!!!
I personally go for a variable with a illuminated recticle , as i use my rifles for stalking / Foxing and longrange pest control....
Always buy the best you can afford - you usually only buy once then!!!
Another thing is , usaully with a more expensive variable optic - when you alter the mag the point of impact does not change!! but testing will prove this!!
I have a Nightforce on my 6.5-55 IMP and a Leupould MK4 on my 308............... very pleased with both

G'day Roch.
Sorry to be three pages into this but what are you shooting?What are you shooting at?
A 375,300,270,223, etc?
Woodland? Plains/longish shots? long/350m plus? Dusk?
Maybe a six power or a 3x9x40 as "all rounders".Can't go wrong with a good brand.
More info would be good .
