Foxing in snow

Truly wonderful stuff with a real Enid Blyton feel that might only be improved c/o a burn-choked crack from a 22 Hornet rather than the canyon spanning 243.

Cheers

:D The .270 was also in the pick up, now that would have been a canyon-spanning-soup-making- racket :D

This week we had 2 dogs and last night 2 vixens. We have a couple very ellusive ones to get, very lamp shy. Going to be all over as v heavy rain forecast for weekend.

Tues was very difficult, windy sleat/snow, glasses were steamed up but i managed 2 dogs, missed a very lamp shy one at about 230 yds, v difficult shot, impossible to get closer. Last night clear as a bell moon lite night. Buddy got 2 vixens with 6mm BR, so we are slowly winning. Couple more to get then see what moves in.

We went out on Wednesday night to four different farms and saw a total of 14 foxes but reduced this number by 4 :D. The first one we shot was the closest I have ever had. I was squeaking a pair up from quite a distance when one appeared from behind the truck and stood the opposite side of the bonnet to me (Less than 5 yards away), must have been hungry or wanted to mate with my mates furry hat he had on.

And then tell everyone what happened next mate........ :D

You come out twice a year and think you are gods gift to shooting  I am not sure what you want me to tell them, do you mean when you dropped your pants and exposed yourself to us and claimed you was Jimmy Savilles love child

Out for a look last night, on my own for a change,as my mate couldn't make it. The chicken farm had seen marks in the snow, so I told the Mrs I'd only be a hour. I went on foot, Lightforce around my neck, and Nightmaster on the scope. After a hour, and calling in about 5 different places, back to the truck to head home. On the way tho, one last look and call at the bottom of the drive, and Bingo, game on! Rifle out, rest on the gatepost, no need for light, could see Charlie in the scope sitting good as gold 120yds away. Squeezed a round off and saw it fall, then heard the thwack, job done! So I backed the Landy up into the gateway, locked the rifle in it, and went to retrieve. At 80 yds out, I saw a shape moving on the field, bloody hell, thought I'd flattened it! Could I catch it and dispatch it, I thought ? Then it went to the spot I'd shot at and I could see another shadow in the snow, **** its another fox!! I ran back through the snow to the trruck, trying to keep low, and move quietly, sure that the fox had seen me and would be gone. Climb the gate, unlock the truck, rack a round into the rifle, lean on the post, eye to the scope, in time to see fox number two giving it shoes and socks accross the field! A quick squeak it stopped, just about to pull and it was off again, another squeak, it stopped again, this time I got the round off, saw it fold and heard the thwack, job done again!! Hell! heart pounding, either the sprint back, or the excitement, or both! Time to pick em up, and as suspected, vixen first, and the dog came after her. I'm in good books at the farm, and only half a hour late home too! And I thought it was called lamping, but didn,t need a lamp much !
Kev.
