Hi Guys,

Do many of you use your dog for both deer and feathered game, if so which breeds and have you had any issues?

Thanks in advance

Did it with my HWV and now doing the same with GWP. They get used to the difference. GWP will be a much better bird dog than the HWV but mainly because I'm able to put much more time into him early on. Now 2 1/2 and you would struggle to find a much better pointing dog to shoot over. He tracks deer very successfully when he needs to but still too bouncy to stalk with me - the HWV stalked to heel and was better than a thermal at indicating deer if you put him in the right place. GWP will get there when he matures a bit, probably another year.

Looks as if he could be used as a shooting rest'as well in that top picture.😁

BC.
He's pretty locked on. Very funny to watch him at full tilt quartering and then full handbrake on to full point. He will set like that for as long as it takes me to get to him - left him for 10 minutes before by the time I have the guns rounded up and in place, not even a glance round to see where I am.

Yes, pretty much always have, GSP and GLP, different dogs have different priorities , but they will all do their best to please.
Heel and drop are essential keystones.

springer spaniel. used lots for feather. just getting started on deer. I think the chance of a snack from the tripe after gralloch is enough to keep them interested. Brilliant family pet. just looking for a suitable stud dog

GSP unbelievable on feather, steady as a rock. just going to get started on the deer stalking hopefully, but need to train to heel when out as he would invariably course a bolting deer. had some great tips from this forum on how to manage those expectations. shall let you know, but apparently many GSP owners successfully manage this.
