They are seriously hardy beasts, 22-250 will do the job if placed properly but i prefer to use the 308 or 30-06

You'll knock most things over with most calibres, but what tends to happen is people who shoot them alot will get confident and be able to get within a decent range and whack them in just the right place and knock them over, say with a .20 calibre. Then others try the same thing alert the quarry, then they are ready to run, a rushed shot is taken and not hit spot on but still in the engine room and the quarry runs with no blood trail.

I doubt my light 243 round would take down a red at 300 yard on a highland moor but down here at 100 yards it will but not if i try to go through both shoulder blades of a rutting stag(not that I've tried). Once with a client my 243 didn't exit a roe at 60yards through the shoulders, but I like using highly frangible bullets for ricochet reasons(a broken up bullet won't go as far as a solid cored whole one). Stick within capabilities of yourself and the rifle and any calibre will be fine. If theres a chance ou'll be pushing eithers limits or you'll be excited (and we all get it sometimes(for me its foxes, even though I kil 180 a year on ave)) then use something that will help you compensate.

A 243 is more likely to punch through than a 223, and you need a blood trail for humane reasons! I personnally like to pick them up from where i shoot them but I only shoot a couple of small species and so use the stuff that does the job

Shot a lot of goats with a 6.5x54 but that was over 40 years ago, shot stags with it also but no longer legal at least with factory ammo.

I have used my .222 on them, did the job but with no drama, .270 and .308 is my idal calibers for them, as the .30 06. Gonna give the .375 H&H an airing on them once GMK get their arse into gear and get the rifle into the country

120 grain TSX out of my 6 1/2, drops em on the spot! I did find that the rest of the herd would run down the hill and up the other side and stop to look. This allows you to get 2 or 3 from the group. Certainly don't need a dog to find these smelly beasts!

I have shot 30+ foxes a week, obviously not each week, but several times, PB's are 19 in 2 nights(not cubs), 13 on 1 night(not cubs), 12 without moving in less than 1 hour(2 litters of cubs).

Quite often shoot 5-8 a night 4-5 times in a week!
